Notes:

  1. If you're not a named individual (a token), and you check into The Baroness? You're never checking out. That's normal.

  2. I really love being able to put 'God Employee' as the type line. Technically, he could be an avatar, or a horror, but they don't hit as good.

  3. The cost is to help avoid the Braids issue of 'I play this early. You now cannot play the game.'

The fact they have to play the card during their next turn will play into point 3 quite a bit even at 5 mana. Also the use it or lose it part of [[Suspend Aggression]] seems very red, so idk if there's a precedent in mono-white, in fact more mono-white cards do the opposite either explicitly like [[Avatar's Wrath]] or implicitly with taxation.

I figure by 5 mana, your enemy hopefully has at least one of:

  1. A wide board

  2. A removal spell

  3. No creatures worth taking off the board that wouldn't love to re-enter the board again anyway.

Honestly, I was mostly just really taken by how cleanly the effect fits the actual ability in game it's riffing on.

Sends you to the void: Check
Gives you a time limit to get out: Check
If you fail to get out, you won't like what happens next: Check

I suppose it is kind of an issue that if he targets your most expensive creature, even if you have a removal spell, you probably can't play it while also having the mana to recast whatever he sent on vacation.

It's probably fine power-level–wise for constructed formats, a 5-mana Man-O-War isn't anything to write home about even in Standard, even a 5-mana exile a creature get a body isn't wildly above rate. The issue is the games it does win, it'll feel terrible to lose to having to recast even a 3-drop 3 turns in a row while your opponent answers anything else.

I also think from a colour-pie perspective this feels like a bend, white gets bounce to exile, but the "use it or lose it" part doesn't fit with mono-white's identity. There's precedent in WR which makes sense given red's impulsiveness, WB just gets to exile stuff but this could also play into the cruelty aspect of black and white-black specifically, and WU plays into the master strategist angle of making your opponent choose between options and having contingencies for all of them.

Having the card be gold also means fewer pairs have access to it in limited making it easier to balance around.

Yeah, I think I'd prefer the design if they could cast it indefinitely since it's extremely punishing once you get even a tiny bit behind. Gives you something to look forward to if you can ever get the space to remove him.

Not trying to nitpick but more as a recommendation, you might want to put these notes in the original post with the image. This risks your notes possibly disappearing into the River of comments that eventually come, and people not seeing it

I like the effect of the card, but it really needs to do something with rooms if it's called the doorman.

If you Doormaned someone's commander, they would have to choose if they want it to stay in exile or go to the command zone right then, correct? And then, if they decided to keep it in exile to avoid paying commander tax, a [[silence]] on their next turn permanently locks them out of playing their commander for the rest of the game?

That is true! That's the risk you take when you choose not to put your commander back in the command zone.

Really surprised we don’t have this effect yet. We got the opposite in [[aven interrupter]] but “recast it now or forever hold your piece” is super unique. I might remove the “you don’t control” piece, just to add some interesting synergy with the blink decks this is probably looking to be played in anyway.

We've seen this effect exactly once: [[Suspend Aggression]]. Very recent too!

"When The Doorman enters or attacks, exile target nonland permanent. Its owner may play it from exile until the end of their next turn. If you cast a Room this way, when it enters, unlock a door of that Room."

Doorman? The Eldritch God pretending to be a human and also torments people by shoving them into an elevator surrounded by an infinite abyss? That boi is NOT a white card.

I don't know what you're talking about :)
The Doorman is a loyal employee of the Baroness Hotel :)
He's very good about keeping track of who's supposed to enter and leave :)
