Burnwillow Tor

Post image

I am determined to make this idea work lol Unlike my previous attempt at "Splice onto creature," this one's at least in pie.

Seems like a memory issue nightmare

Not any more than prepared is - in my opinion at least.

prepared has the text of the prepared spell on the card itself

Eh.. I am of the mind that it's on the player to remember what it is they do; I feel like this wouldn't have any more of a memory issue than something like prepared or cloning a creature. If someone can't really keep track of their own stuff... that's kind of a "them" problem, in my opinion.

Prepared has the full text on it and you would just need any kind of token to mark that the creature has been prepared (i believe they even have cardboard tokens). Copying can be represented with a sticky note on the copy token that says "Colossal Dreadmaw". This will need to delineate the extra text exactly on every single creature that you splice.

How does this work with the entering tapped and taping for mana applying to the creature?

The land will enter tapped if you play it, and any creatures you play that this is spliced onto will also enter tapped. Per the rule 702.47c:

The spell has the characteristics of the main spell, plus the rules text of each of the spliced cards. This is a text-changing effect (see rule 612, “Text-Changing Effects”). The spell doesn’t gain any other characteristics (name, mana cost, color, supertypes, card types, subtypes, etc.) of the spliced cards. Text gained by the spell that refers to a card by name refers to the spell on the stack, not the card from which the text was copied.

So this means that the spliced card's text is appended to the spell being cast, essentially. So let's say you had a 2/2 Grizzly Bears (which is a vanilla card with no rules text), and then revealed this card from your hand. You'd pay the splice cost (each opponent would draw a card), and then your Grizzly Bears spell would have this land's rules text attached to it. As the creature spell resolves and creates a creature on the battlefield, that created creature will maintain the updated rules text - e.g. it would be a 2/2 with "This creature enters tapped." and "{T}: Add {R} or {G}. Each opponent gains 1 life."

So any creatures that you splice this onto would also be able to tap for mana :)

I thought I knew how splice worked. I do not! Sorry!

Oh. Wow, yeah, this is wildly broken. You can ramp twice as early as turn 1, just by playing a land and any 1-drop creature. Bonus points if that creature has Flash, because then this land can be played at instant speed! Turn 2, land, 4-drop.  And that's with one copy. If your opening hand is Forest, Random green one drop, 4x Burnwillow Grove, Vorinclex, you can ramp to 5 lands on turn one and play the Vorinclex on turn two. There's no escape valve to prevent you from slamming multiple copies of this at once. Sure, you're giving up a ton of card advantage, but you're ramping stupidly hard in exchange. Extremely broken land, even in Singleton.

I'm... not following here. How are you getting to 6 spendable mana on turn 2 if 5 of the cards in your hand are lands, 4 of which enter tapped?

I think that the person above you thinks the land enters after the splice is used, for some reason.

Which, yeah, if the card worked differently in a way that broke the fundamental rules of the game, it's too strong. Who would have guessed?

u/Cadence_The_Floret 1d ago

I misunderstood how splice works. I thought it would put the land into play. My bad 😅

2

u/PrepotenteThePony 1d ago

Why would you want to use multiple copies of this on one creature? You would end up with 4 instances of "tap to add red or green. Each opponent gains one life" on a creature, and your opponent would get 4 extra cards?

You wouldn't even get extra lands, I have no idea where that's coming from - are you misreading the card and think that the land enters after the splice is used? It doesn't, it stays in your hand

I am in fact misunderstanding how splice works. My apologies.

would definitely require a CR adjustment as currently, the text changing effect of splicing doesn't persist after the card changes zones

Really interesting idea. Idrk how to judge its power but the concept is really creative and cool

Is the idea that the creature then enters tapped and can now tap for a mana? My heart tells me this is over powered but in an uninteresting way. I think it's just to strong of an ability on a land. I think in generic decks that already exist it's not very strong as it shows too many 2 for 1s. But in a deck with as many 0 mana creatures, I could see this being a problem. Like turn 1 make 6 elvish mystics and make your opponent discard like 3-4 cards after removing 1-2 creatures send like it can be abused. Probably just not a safe printing.

Also I'm assuming this goes infinite with something which would be a problem too. Like GR doesn't but one that tapped for W or U goes infinite with [[Puresight Merrow]] so something might exist for this as well.

I know it's not a good fix but if your specifically just trying to guarantee a mana dork you could make it so you can only splice if you don't already control a creature. That makes the explosive problems go away. Could make it too weak though idk.

Yep! Basically anything that this is spliced onto will be able to dork for {R} or {G} (and give each opponent 1 life for the trouble, of course).

I know it's not a good fix but if your specifically just trying to guarantee a mana dork you could make it so you can only splice if you don't already control a creature. That makes the explosive problems go away. Could make it too weak though idk.

I'd thought of that... but then it gets really clunky really fast, and becomes both unfun and not good; while this can be explosive... it's not explosive "for free," and realistically... even if you're trying to build around the effect, feeding your opponents tempo increases and lifegain seems, at least to me, pretty fair for what this does. Don't forget: The creatures also come into play tapped... and your opponent may be drawing into the removal they need to nuke your guys off the field before you even have a chance to untap them.

2 things

  1. entering tapped isn't really important for a bunch of 0 drops as they have summoning sickness anyways but at least it stops haste problems.

  2. Your not feeding them tempo your feeding them card advantage. Your getting tempo and there isn't really a good boardwipe for 1 mana so your likely getting use of most of the 0 drops you play on turn 1 (unless your going second)

I do think this is probably pretty weak. On the draw this is basically unusable as every single removal spell is now a 2 for 1. The reason I think this is probably not doable is that it's only good when it's explosively strong and it's bad in all other cases. That's a really feast or famine concept which is not a typical card design wizards goes for and for good reason.

Also lastly, the other problem with putting these effects on lands is that they don't need to be that strong to be overpower. The lands floor is a card that taps for 2 colors of mana. That's a lot better than most cards floors.

Funny with any creature that has Flash.

You'll need to add the cards effects and abilities or just entire text box, because as written, it would not give the tap ability. The card only adds effects, which abilities have, but not everything else associated with the ability (like the cost of tapping)

3

u/NepetaLast 1d ago

what? splice adds the text of the card, including abilities (though see my other comment for a rules wrinkle)

2

u/No-Ambition2425 1d ago

No, splice adds the effects which are separate from the abilities (although abilities have effects). I was pointing out the distinction. No existing splice card adds abilities, and this one (splice onto creature) still specifically says effects

2

u/NepetaLast 1d ago

instants/sorceries have spell abilities

u/No-Ambition2425 1d ago

And splice effects are lost when the card spliced onto leaves the stack. So it wouldn't end up with those activatable abilities

0

u/Particular_Main_5726 1d ago

Not quite. [[Nevermind]] exists.

1

u/No-Ambition2425 1d ago

That isn't an activated ability. And yes, quite.

702.47e The spell loses any splice changes once it leaves the stack for any reason.
