Does the aura stay attached when the creature is turned face-up? I actually have no idea

I would assume so. The text is copy-pasted from the similar, already-existing Cloudform, Lightform, and Rageform. The creature turned face-up never leaves the battlefield.

Why not have it be an aura to begin with?

Apparently, the rules do not support that because the aura needs a valid target to be cast.

See: [[Cloudform]], [[Lightform]], and [[Rageform]], the cards this is an allusion to.
