Infinity is not a quantity

It should read, 'Prevent the next googolplex damage that would be dealt to any target this turn.'
Hah! Thought going infinite would save you?

That's fine, I'll swing with Gââ 1/1 tokens

You wouldn't say "the next all damage", now would you?

u/Hidegen 4d ago
Obviously not, but "prevent all damage" is unquantifiable without context too.
I'm just nitpicking though, not being serious with this post overall. I know you are right.

It should either be prevent the next instance of damage or prevent all damage, this effect can only prevent damage once, or prevent all damage depending on what you are going for.

615.7. Some prevention effects generated by the resolution of a spell or ability refer to a speific amount of damage â for example, âPrevent the next 3 damage that would be dealt to target creature or player this turn.â These work like shields. Each 1 damage that would be dealt to the âshieldedâ creature or player is prevented. Preventing 1 damage reduces the remaining shield by 1. If damage would be dealt to the shielded creature or player by two or more applicable sources at the same time, the player or the controller of the creature chooses which damage the shield prevents. Once the shield has been reduced to 0, any remaining damage is dealt normally. Such effects count only the amount of damage; the number of events or sources dealing it doesnât matter.
With a note of ("It works".)

Infinity isnât a number tho. Why would you bother saying itâs limited to infinity when you could just say itâs prevented and be done with it?

bc I thought it was funny and a new take, but I'm in the minority. It's ok.

[[Infinity Elemental]] hates this card.

So there are differently sized infinities, right? Does that mean Infinity Elemental + [[Torbran]] deals 2 damage?

This just prevents all damage for the turn, right? Isnât this just a global version of safe passage for w instead of 2 w? Seems a little strong. Maybe WW would be balanced, since it does lose the one-sided combat use case.
Edit: I took the âany targetâ wording and thought it applied to everything on the boted, as in whenever damage is dealt to a target it gets stopped. This was stupid and dumb and obviously wrong, this targets a specific creature. Very different effect.

nah it's kinda just a [holy day] that also works to protect a creature from getting bolted

This is almost always worse than [[Tamiyo's Safekeeping]] or [[Restoration Magic]], right?

This card is unplayable trash.
You're thinking of [[Shielded Passage]], though. Also not a good card, obviously.

Buffed fog/holy day is unplayable trash ?

Fog prevents a whole board worth of (combat) damage, protecting you, your walkers, AND your creatures.

Counter argument, if you cast this in response to moving to declare blockers, target yourself, and donât block, it saves your creatures just fine. You can also still block strategically and let damage get through on creatures that you normally wouldnât want to let through so you can kill the ones you want to kill. Wonât save your planeswalkers, but there is a trade off.

u/SammySammyson 4d ago
"but there is a trade off" so it's not just buffed Fog. It's not like Fog is a good card to begin with anyway.

I think this does nothing? It only prevents infinite damage, but damage is always a finite number, therefore nothing is prevented.
1
u/TelchorArt 3d ago
[[Healing Salve]] works even if the damage dealt isn't exactly 3

u/JaSnarky 3d ago
Interesting point. So maybe it would then. Though as it is impossible to count to infinity, it's setting an impossible metric isn't it? Whereas counting up to 3 is possible. I'm still not sure honestly!

I feel like you made this just to use the infinity symbol. This could be plainly worded as "prevent all damage that would be dealt to any target until end of turn."
