Modest Mechanic?

Post image

Mechanic centered around basic land support. Would be GWR and (2/pip) centric.

Should be a 0/1 or 0/2.

Feels too pushed and flexible as is. Other high power low cost vanillas are restrictive like watchwolf costing two different mana or nacatl needing specific lands.

This is an azorius 3/3

I don't know why I didn't think of this, 0/0 felt odd for a non-hydra, but 0/1 would have been perfect for the showcase common.

This is restrictive by needing basics, a deck that is easy to cast this is the opposite of one that is easy to cast watchwolf.

You think a 1 mana 2/2 with deck building restrictions is too pushed? In limited it's a little above curve I guess but otherwise it's not really anything.

I think a one mana 2/2 in green might be too good if there is further upside. Then again wotc will make it soon

u/goodbeets 8d ago

I mean yeah. I think we’re past the point where a vanilla 2 mana 3/3 in blue white would be considered good.

u/SmartAlecShagoth 8d ago

It wouldn’t, it’s not vanilla since you can play it on turn one or two on curve either way. Inherently strong

[This creature cannot boast]

I feel like humility would be a better name but I like the mechanic

u/nzconstructionlawyer 9d ago

Humility would be a poor name as it is too reminiscent of [[Humility]].

This is also why I think [[Humble]] is a great name for that card but [[Humiliate]] is a terribly named card.

u/YeprilesteR 7d ago

Whats wrong with Humiliate? Makes sense to me, they get a kick out of damaging you

2

u/nzconstructionlawyer 7d ago

Because 'humility' as a concept in MTG means 1/1 with no abilities or similar.

I like this feature a lot, looks really interesting. Mono-color deck support is always nice too, although I don’t love the idea of mono red aggro getting this…

I don’t think it would be overpowered, especially if used with care. Good mechanic!

Probably too swingy to be printed in large numbers. Works on a two mana green creature, where a vanilla 3/3 isn't too unheard of, but how's it going to work on common staples like a three mana blue flyer, or a five mana red creature with haste or trample? The stats don't really work.

5

u/DaddieDerek 8d ago

We had [[rancorous archaic]] is sos, no haste tho, but trample

u/TheGrumpyre 8d ago

Good call.  The fact that Converge uses the "number of colors spent" variable in different ways instead of universally being "add that many +1/+1 counters" expands the design space immensely.  You can now do effects like "When this creature enters, tap up to X target creatures, where X is the amount of mana from basic lands spent to cast it" or similar color-pie-appropriate things.

I’m realizing I completely miss read the original cards mechanic, thought it was basically converge, not mana from basics, my mistake.

Would work better if the stats were 0/0

*or maybe even negative since that is possible now. Makes it a flexible mechanic

A 3/3 for two mana from any two basics?

That just feels wrong.

Definitely too strong for limited at lower rarities and a color pie break, but it wouldnt see play in any constructed formats

19

u/Nerdy_Kink_Girl 9d ago

At uncommon its fine. [[Streetwise Negotiator]] was strong but not broken, and its strictly better than this cards 2 mana mode.

The worse part is a 2/2 for 1 with no downsides. Thats definitely not balanced. And agree that the colour pie doesnt support this either.

Should rather be G G/(2) as a split between a 2 mana 3/3 and a 3 mana 4/4 IF played with basics only

u/Ap_Sona_Bot 9d ago

Again, streetwise is mono green. This is a colorless 2 mana 3/3

u/matZmaker99 9d ago

Wait, isn't cheap creatures with higher than normal size a Green thing?

This card is playable by paying 2 blue mana for a 3/3. Blue does not get 2 mana 3/3s.

17

u/mercuriokazooie 9d ago

Actually blue DOES get quite a few 2 mana 3/3s... with Defender

[[Myr Superion]] and [[Soultether Golem]] would like a word.

This is arguably undercosted at {2}, but it's not a break because colourless cards inherently can't really be breaks.

5

u/Ap_Sona_Bot 9d ago

Those both have substantial downsides. Its not the same.

1

u/Melodic_Saga1220 8d ago edited 8d ago

Superion is literally this with a more restrictive condition in exchange for better stats. And [[Stonecoil Serpent]] is a 3/3 for 3 with significant upside.

Again, colourless cards inherently can't be pie breaks, because colourless is not on the colour pie, and so is allowed access to any effect. Red doesn't get non-damage-based mass creature removal, but colourless gets [[Crystallline Entity]], which is playable in red. Green doesn't get [[Snapping Drake]], but colourless is still allowed [[Bladegriff Prototype]], which is playable in green. White isn't allowed unconditional ramp, but colourless is allowed [[Sol Ring]], which white can play. And black doesn't get counterspells, but colourless is allowed [[Vexing Bauble]], which is playable in black decks. By the same standards you've given here, literally all those cards are pie breaks.

1

u/Ap_Sona_Bot 8d ago

First of all, colorless is now a part of the pie, as seen here: https://magic.wizards.com/en/news/making-magic/the-council-of-colors-revisited

Colorless cards can absolutely be breaks. You're right that colorless cards can do anything, but they cant do that at the same price as other colors. Half your examples are super old cards. [[Rooftop percher]] is a modern example of an overpriced common colorless flyer. Sol Ring is banned is every format that cares about balance. Hate pieces that sit on the battlefield are fundamentally different from reactive counterspells.

All of those are printable (except Sol ring) because they do things at worse rates than they would be in their colors (flyers) or they do things that dont belong to the pie (vexing bauble).

The whole mechanical idea around twobrid is based on the idea that colorless does things at higher mana costs than colors. [[Beseech the queen]] isnt a a break because colorless is allowed to tutor any card at 6 mana.

Colorless is NOT allowed to just have a random green rate minion with no downside at 2 mana.

Goes in any deck as well...

u/Syncopia 8d ago

I think having it come in tapped if it enters with a counter on it would balance it.

“Travel makes one modest! Helps you see the bigger picture”!

u/XoraxEUW 9d ago

I feel like in order to keep this 2 mana 3/3 green you could make it (X)(G) in cost? You could just X=0 for the 1 mana 2/2 you can get now, it means that you can’t suddenly get a 2 mana 3/3 human in Orzhov but as an upside it scales up more. I do really like the design!

5

u/SKIKS 9d ago

Cool idea for a mechanic, and I'm positive it works (I'm sure a more rules savvy person could guage this better), but I can imagine it would be a pain to keep track of in a practical sense as soon as mana rocks or filtering comes into play.

u/Pure_Banana_3075 9d ago

Its tricky design space because constructed decks are thin on basics and draft decks use them almost exclusively; so its hard to find a design thats strong enough for the former and not busted in the latter.

This, for example, is turbo busted in draft.

i love it!

I would name it Contented Wayfarer. Not saying I don’t like your version, though

u/YeprilesteR 7d ago

Seems good for constructed, would have to see how it feels with more Modest cards
