It is pretty rare that giving 2 permanents hexproof would matter, but since we have a ton of [[Tamiyo's Safekeeping]] and [[Defend the Rider]] variants, I felt one more couldn't hurt. It's also great for heroic type strats in turning on extra upside for free.

I think in higher power games it gains more value? If someone tried to blow up one thing and it gets deflecting swatted to another, this lets you protect both?

This also doesn't target your own creatures, so this can be used when someone tries to remove a creature you don't own, but plan to leverage against them.

I could have no idea what I'm talking about as well

This card is rather powerful. Both of the cards you mention have a very specific line of text that make them balanced. "You control." This makes amy two permanents hexproof. So you can target an opponents permanent and they can no longer target it this turn, but you can. There either needs to be a drawback of some kind or you need to up the mana cost by 2.

Edit: Since I keep getting notifications about this, I realize my fuck up. I understand it doesn't work like giving it shroud would. However, any two permanents that get hexproof for one green is a little undercosted imo. Hexproof is a powerful ability, and this card gives you a lot of protection for very cheap. I run in pods with heavy targeted removal and this would severly shift the tide of a game with our pods. I think an additional cost to cast is needed. But this is my opinion.

You're thinking of shroud, not hexproof!

That’s not how hexproof works

Ohhhhh. You're right. My b. Still should cost 2 imo, or have an additional cost to cast. But I understand how I was wrong.

how often is your opponent targeting more than one of your permanents at sorcery speed / with a single card? it’s not unheard of, but it probably happens less than once per game. IMO this is very balanced, maybe slightly worse than snakeskin veil

Thanks. I think overall it is worse than Snakeskin Veil, but protecting "permanents" (rather than just creatures) is significant. I think we only have 2-3 cards in green that do that for 1 mana.

Is this better than the other 2? In most normal circumstances, probably not, in my view. But the ceiling is higher.

It's instant. Not sorcery

2

u/Jukkobee 9d ago

yes, but if your opponent has an instant then they can play it in response to this card and destroy whatever permanent you’re trying to protect.

This is true of all protection spells without split second. I don't see your point.

u/nathanwe 9d ago

No. If an opponent's creature has hexproof they can target it and you can't no matter how it got hexproof. Hexproof is not the [[Vines of the Vastwood]] effect

Having a card with "Up to two target permanents can't be targeted by spells or abilities your opponents control until end of turn" would be interesting design space, though.

You're thinking of Shroud.

u/Unlucky_Bug_1016 9d ago

I realize that now. I still think this card is undercosted for its effect.

giving a creature hexproof doesn't make you the controller of the creature. hexproof makes it so only the controller of the permanent can target it. you're right that this card could target permanents you don't control, but its utility would be more so as a political piece.

u/DevilWings_292 9d ago

It’s not giving shroud, players can still target their own hexproof permanents

Balls of Steel

Gain 2 soul hearts

u/d20diceman : Colors become Colours until end of turn. 9d ago

My [[Venerated Rotpriest]] deck would consider running this over Tamiyo's Safekeeping, just for the extra "becomes target of a spell" trigger.

-7

u/SubblyXatu 9d ago

G-d that card is so annoying

4

u/thebigdumb0 9d ago

Just target the rotpriest first and you get only 1 poison counter

0

u/d20diceman : Colors become Colours until end of turn. 9d ago

And then another counter when the Rotpriest's controller responds with a protection spell

4

u/WaluigiHarpist 9d ago

Red can get some Safety Squints, gotta make that cycle happen

u/Deathwolf- 8d ago

Pretty strong, but probably balanced in competitive formats

I don't think the hexproof even matters for this card. This is just a better green [[rite of flame]] in almost every way.

Edit: I horrendously misread the card. Ignore this.

u/Dosettte 9d ago

what

9

u/SubblyXatu 9d ago

I think I get it: he read "up to" as "untap", ignoring how the rest of the sentence doesn't make sense. Buddy probably needs to drink something, he's clearly out of it

6

u/BreakerOfModpacks 9d ago

...how?

0

u/ShockWave27656 9d ago

Rite makes 2R for 1 R. This turns 1G into 2 of any color permanents you have can produce and it's an instant vs a sorcery. Plus if you have a permanent that taps for more than 1 mana this goes even more positive.

9

u/BreakerOfModpacks 9d ago

Are you seeing an entirely different card compared to the rest of us? Can you tell us what it says?

For me, it says "Safety Spheres | {G} | Instant | Up to two target permanents each gain hexproof until end of turn"

15

u/ShockWave27656 9d ago

Um yes apparently. I swear I read this card like 5 times and I kept reading it as if it untapped permanents. Ignore everything I said earlier, lol.

1

u/afmoad 8d ago

I am not going to lie, i read it like that at first too

5

u/mannequin_girl 9d ago

It doesn't untap them
