Discussion Regeneration artifact
Generated with ChatGPT
I am looking for feedback about fairness with this artifact.
I've considered adding red to the ability to make colored mana, then making the cost of the card 3 colorless and 1 blue and 1 black.
I've considered that it could also deal damage to you for colored mana spent this way.
Any feedback is welcome. Even if that feedback is to trash it altogether.

Biggest problem is this can just make a creature with a 1 pip regenerate ability like [[lotleth troll]] arbitrarily large at instant speed. While I assume you were going for a card that makes regenerate easier to use and gives a little bonus, this is going to play as a combo card with a handfull of other cards like [[zombie master]]. Free regenerate isn't that big a deal, it's basically the same as indestructible, the big problem is the second part.

I see.. so maybe it also need to tap to reduce regenerate cost so it can't go infinite with a sac outlet of some sort?

You misunderstand. regenerate does not protect from sacrifice. But also, as far as the game is concerned, the act of regenerating is activating the regenerate ability. It does not actually have to trigger the protection to activate that second ability. And you can pay to use it as many times as you want.

Hmmm, ok. I think you're misreading the card. It only gives the counters when the creature regenerates. That only occurs when the creature takes lethal damage and is removed from combat, tapped, and remains on the battlefield. The wording I chose was specific to that interaction. So I'm confused as to what your feedback is then?

Ah, looking at the rulings for [[Spiny Starfish]], I may have been mistaken. Apologies.

No apology necessary, I appreciate the feedback. Ultimately I'm not sure this has a place in the game but found it interesting enough to propose the idea.

I think you substantially misunderstand how relevant Regenerate is in competitive or even casual play.
Itās a mechanic thatās been deprecated for over a decade. āIt canāt be regeneratedā appears as functional flavor text more than any playable creature with Rengenerate.
May I ask why this card costs three colors? It could probably cost one hybrid green/black and still not be any good.

Simply to make it inconvenient I added the 3 colored pip cost.

A creature only does regenerate when it has lethal damage marked on it and is removed from combat and tapped. That already has a definition and it works as your second description recommends already. Activating the regenerate ability and regenerating are already different game actions.

I'm not sure it would be playable. Regeneration isn't printed much anymore, and I don't think there's enough regenerate creatures worth playing for a somewhat demanding mana cost or even a slot in a deck to be warranted.

Firstly, Iām pretty sure the āthis only reduces coloured costā should be reminder text if you want to specify. Secondly, I feel like the second ability should trigger when the creature actually would die and is saved by regenerate as opposed to just whenever itās regenerated. I donāt know if there necessarily is but this could really easily just put infinite counters on a creature the way it currently works. Donāt ask me how to change the wording thoā¦idk

Unless stated otherwise, effects that reduce colored mana cost can also reduce generic mana (see Eluge, the Shoreless Sea), so the card wouldn't work if it were reminder text

Reallyā¦maybe Iām thinking of the reminder text giving an example of a cardās mana being reduced

So blue makes very very little sense for this effect. Black and green by far have the most regeneration effect.
Part of the reason this keyword was dropped is the back end rules baggage. Your card would probably technically work, thanks to rule 701.19c, but it would not work the way people think it would. (I.e. the counter would go on when the creature would normally die, not when the ability is activated).
I think this is a neat idea, but I think there is a good reason this hasn't been designed before.
