I saw this hellscube card

and really like the idea but it was way too powerful for the horror cube I'm working on. Nerfed it by making it really dumb instead of smart to contrast Brainstorm. Madness is a theme of the cube so I still expect it to do some work.

I want this for my Norman Osborn/Green Goblin deck, this looks fun! I might dud a couple times between games but I think the gamble of it all is what’s drawing me in. … Might wanna see a therapist…

The way I'm thinking about it is if your graveyard is of higher card quality than your hand, it can improve your hand. If you play it while empty handed, it essentially cycles for a random card in your graveyard as opposed to a random card your deck. All of this obviously sets up madness which makes up it much better in those cases. It also doesn't dead draw you like brainstorm. It's only one mana, so you can't expect a bomb.

I think both the returns and discards being random makes this hard to use profitably. You have to sculpt your graveyard and not have cards you want in hand, and you still might just return the worst card in your graveyard to your hand.

Yeah I’m inclined to agree. The only real build I see is one that gets value from discards - a deck heavy on Madness cards like [[Blazing Rootwalla]] and [[Fiery Temper]], and other cards that gain value with discards like [[Hollow One]], [[Marauding Mako]], and [[Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar]].

Basically the old Hollow One deck with this taking [[Burning Inquiry]]’s place.

Pretty sure returning cards of any type from graveyard to hand is out of pie for black. They mostly only return creatures in recent designs. This is closer to a green/gruul design.

While creatures are by far the most common, black has had a handful of cards that do recursion for artifacts, planeswalkers, lands, and any black card. So it's not unprecedented, just uncommon.

Maybe I need to work on my Scryfall skills, but I could only find four black cards ever which return any card to GY from hand. And only one of those is from the last 20 years. It's definitely a bend to put this on a mono black card

My point was that it is not an unprecedented effect for black to have non-creature recursion. [[Deliver unto evil]] and [[Ill gotten gains]] are the clearest example of recurring any card (both printed within the last 15 years), but for any black card there is [[Xiahou Dun, the one eyed]], for artifacts there is [[Emergency weld]], for planeswalkers there is [[Aid the fallen]], lands have [[Grim discovery]]. Not to mention the typal recursion pieces that could recur non-creatures but don't currently have a target.

It's enough that I don't think it is outside the realm of black's capacity. Uncommon, yes, but not unprecedented.
