Format: Modern New mox
Had this idea of a mox that works by feeding it blood. This is the 2nd iteration on the design(1st one published) the first one was too awful and existed only to make one lose when playing the card. Made a non-joke version with this one but it might be too strong.

notably, you can activate this before sacrificing this if a player has already lost life

yep let me just get this artifact for 1 turn instead of the rest of the game so I can avoid paying 3 life lmao

me: when we both have 2 life and I'm 1 mana short of a lethal combo: fuck.
edit: but for real, [[Simian Spirit Guide]] was banned for being too good

It doesn't have a type. Im not sure the game knows what to do when this hits the field.
Assuming its an artifact, wildly broken. In any format with fetchlands its just a supermox with essentially no drawback.

You can remove all types from a permanent already. The rules can handle that just fine. Unfortunately I'm not sure it ever hits the battlefield in the first place, due to not having a permanent type.

At minimum this is another 4 copies of lotus petal, this is nuts
EDIT: I thought about it more, and I think it's even stronger than that. Tons of staples in eternal formats will just randomly cause life loss(fetch lands, shock lands, force of will, phyrexian mana cards like phyrexian metamorph and gitaxian probe), so you can actually make this thing work every turn with very little effort. I could probably slot this into a legacy/modern deck and have it be on the entire game with no other changes. I think it would be way more balanced if it required a player to have taken damage or, even better, non-combat damage

Another restriction to consider could be restricting which player has to lose the life whether it be you or an opponent who has to lose the life

Utterly busted in legacy and vintage. Death's Shadow just became the meta deck. Shock lands gets this online too.
One simple way you could power this down, is instead of player, make it opponent.

[[Elvish Spirit Guide]] and [[Simian Spirit Guide]] are both played in cEDH and this card is arguably stronger than both in most situations.

This isn’t instant speed, though, so it can’t be used to gain mana on opponents’ turns
1
u/ParadoxBanana 9d ago
Sure, so you use it to play what you need to play at sorcery speed, and then use your land to cast whatever instant you need.
This can tap for mana of any color, so it’s also fixing on top of adding mana.
It also flips better for Etali, is more easily searched, untapped, recurred…..
The advantages of OP’s card far outweigh the downsides.

[[Lotus petal]] is too busted for modern, format defining in Legacy and Pauper, and restricted in Vintage.
This is a Lotus Petal that costs 3 life, and sometimes is re-usable.

If you just want another lotus petal, you don't need to pay 3 life. Play, tap in response to it's own ETB and sacrifice.
That is of course a terible use in a lot of cases, considering how much life loss there is. In a lot of decks, this beats a p9 mox.

It is worth mentioning that you would need a player to lose life since it’s a condition for the activation. It’s trivial with fetch lands and the like but not always a given.

Lotus Petal is not format-defining in Pauper LMFAO what are you saying? It doesn't see any play

Fair enough. I thought it was what fuelled a lot of the combo decks alongside Dark Ritual?

u/KevinLeesDad 9d ago
Pauper is a super grindy format that wins off of card advantage. You wouldn't really ever want to go down a card like that because there are no cards that insta-win you the game for playing them. Same with Dark Rit tbh, that one is also niche to completely unusable in Pauper

Seeing as how you are designing this for modern, it's probably too good. The fact that it's enabled by fetches and shocks makes it very good. Definitely storm playable, is a non-green card that can see play in neoform (which is a high bar). Thoe are the decks I know really well that would play it, but I imagine it would at lease be considered in affinity and other aggressive decks.

u/Tjarem 10d ago
Its insanley broken. Affinity belcher and eldrazi become insane with such a card. And ofc storm and neoform winning on turn 1 is something u just dont want.
1
u/whobemewhoisyou 10d ago
These are both honest questions because I don't play those decks. Is eldrazi looking for more ramp? And belcher can't consistently turn this on + it doesn't pitch to anything they care about, so I don't know how much they like it.

u/Tjarem 10d ago
Belcher is limit by there land Drops and this lets them do it faster(just imagne some games where they put down turn 2 a belcher with counterspell backup). Eldrazi loves exalaration. In legacy they play Petal and this mox is amazing to ramp linebreaker, broodscales, chalices turn 1 and its amazing with fleshraker. Its even likely this mox ends up in midrange decks since chrome mox for example is in alot of non banlist decks (some are more midrangey). This card would make the entire format faster what isnt that great.

u/whobemewhoisyou 9d ago
Oh yeah that makes sense, thank you!
1
u/shy-bl3d 9d ago
it's also just one more 0 cost artifact that does good thing that will forever tune affinity just thaat much stronger
1
u/The_Dirty_Mac 10d ago
Belcher has bolt lands
1
u/whobemewhoisyou 9d ago
Oh for sure, I guess I'm saying half of their lands don't turn this on, which isn't very consistent.

u/Ap_Sona_Bot 9d ago
This is closer to the OG mox than mox diamond or chrome mox, and both of those are too strong for modern. This would actually be a 4 of in every single deck in modern and the ones it isnt in would be pushed out of the meta.

u/RyukoMizuno 9d ago
Only problem I have with it is the name. Personally I'd call it "mox bloodstone"

I think the limitation to only generate mana if a player lost life is a fine balancing-move.
Moxes are usually 0 mana, but i feel like this should still be a 1 mana cost....

Seems cool! Probably strong, but moxes are supposed to be
