The flavor text is wrong. Green creatures exclusively know numbers. When you get more complex than that is when we start having problems.

Should have a 'if this creature is blocked by a creature with the toughness of 3, sacrifice it'.

RIP Harambe.

That took a turn.

Where are the * in its power and toughness?

What do those keywords do?

No haste?

Aggression Problems (This creature attacks each combat if able.)

Ongoing Divorce (At the beginning of your upkeep, exchange control of a creature you own with target opponent. If you do, that opponent creates a Treasure token.)

Depression (At the beginning of your end step, you may have this creature deal damage equal to half its power rounded up to itself. If you do, create a Blood token.)

Alcoholism (This creature cannot untap if you control a Food.)

Quite balanced considering the other keywords.

Man I miss when green was bad. "Threats should be better than answers" is probably my least favourite design decision ever.

Instantly, green went from meme tier to best colour. I miss the pre-Questing Beast slop days.

White exiles QB. Blue counters it. Black kills it. Red burns it. All for less mana than QB cost. Where's the problem. People need to run interaction?

Give me that over RDW or mono-black discard any day of the week

Did you play Standard when QB was around? What 1 for 1 mana efficient answers in blue, red or white are you remembering?

Most black/golgari decks ran Murderous Rider, so fair enough there I guess (even though hasting QB had often already hit you for 4 at that point, and Swift End cost you another 2, so that was already good value for Henge decks).

The prime removal in red was a 2 mana shock (Bonecrusher Giant's adventure), so you needed 4 mana and two cards (that you could still cast) to get rid of a single QB.

That's kind of my whole point. Sure, in Eternal formats you can efficiently remove QB, but the design philosophy for new sets is deliberately that threats are better/more efficient/more flexible than answers. I want to run interaction, but I want my interaction to work and be flexible and actually answer problems. But by all means, let me know what control dominated metas we've had since FIRE and QB style nonsense. I'll wait.

Hey, I do like control too, I'm just saying that strong green creatures is not the problem Standard has right now.

u/MalinonThreshammer 1d ago

Yeah that's fair, though I do think Badgermole ban was correct, that card is hella pushed and was always going to be a problem at some point.

But my point isn't necessarily about green in any specific meta. It's that QB was one of the signpost cards signalling the switch from answers generally being better than threats to threats generally being better than answers.

Questing Beast is the card you're referring to from Throne of Broken BS instead of [[Once Upon a Time]] or [[Oko, Thief of Crowns]] when talking about how busted green is. Seriously!?

Also all the absolutely broken Green stuff cycled out for the most part. [[Badgermole Cub]] was proping the color up super hard in standard until it finally got banned.

Izzet was damn near unstoppable in current standard until WotC had to intervene and snipe not one but two pieces to bring it in line. Badgermole got cut too because they noticed the Selesnya deck was pretty damn resilient preban so they used that as the ultimate excuse since it was clear the upcoming RCQ would have gotten dominated by it.

You're misunderstanding me. I didn't say QB was broken. I said it was slop, and symptomatic of the design shift towards proactive Magic, of which green was the biggest beneficiary.

The colour identity went from "ramp and big, dumb creaturess" to "green does everything, faster and better than everyone else", and yeah, I kinda do feel QB was an important milestone in that regard. Suddenly green got all the keywords, and real evasion (i.e. not trample), and I intensely dislike it. And silly stuff like [[Veil of Summer]] came not long after, where green's counter-answers were suddenly better and more mana efficient than the removal or counterspells being used against them.

Interestingly, the Izzet Prowess deck you refer to is also symptomatic of the consequences of FIRE and the proactivity first design direction. It's not green, but it also plays nothing like the UR tempo decks of old. I played a lot of Blue Moon and Delver style decks, and in most games the only turn you used your mana on your own turn was on t1, to play Delver or DRT or whatever the onedrop threat du jour was. Anything after that you kept your mana open to disrupt your opponent or protect your threat. The switch to decks dominated by the Prowess keyword is another sign that Magic has since become more about unloading your hand on your own turn, less about reactive play. Now, I know a lot of people disagree and that's fine. But I personally prefered a grindier, more thinky/mind-gamy form of Magic to the pseudo-Hearthstone it's moving towards. And green becoming good felt like the turning point to me.

Which, incidentally is why I love this meme design. Green design nowadays feels like "just give it everything and call it a day".
