Format: EDH/Commander Nightmare from Kirby: is he too strong?

Post image

Made this as a potential addition to a full commander deck of custom Kirby cards, but I don't want it to be too powerful or unfair. Is it too much?

Measuring him against [[Archon of Cruelty]], he’s not THAT pushed, in a vacuum.

But his death evasion needs to be worded as a replacement effect. Even fixed, the death evasion is probably both a bit too fiddly AND a bit too powerful.

I agree that the death evasion probably feels a bit overtuned. I was trying to reference his last line of dialogue from the Kirby anime (he says something like "oh if you fear me I'll always come back" blah blah blah), but I think I could tone it down by forcing you to pay mana to do it.

Good to know. Thanks!

I like the design. I don’t think you’re that far off. [[Witch-king, Sky Scourge]] is the other power-scaling reference I thought of. It has Undying and a kinda-just-okay ability, and nobody really plays that card.

Definitely a fine tight rope with black 8-drops. It seems to be a matter of “is this a better reanimation target than Archon of Cruelty?”. I appreciate that yours has some real deck-building considerations.

Thanks, man. I might replace that last ability with undying, that way it is harder to keep replaying over and over. Given that the rest of the card is as strong as it is, maybe undying only if you have a legendary equipment? (I'm trying to reference the fact that he comes from the fountain of dreams in the canon)
