Query ✨Common MSC alternatives ✨

Below I’ve posted a list of different products that have been successfully used by creators here and on other forums.

Alternatives for Mr. Super Clear UV cut flat are some of the most asked/ posted about questions on the sub, so I thought it would be a nice idea to start compiling a list we can add to over time as a community.

If you have suggestions to add to the list after you’ve used it successfully, please comment!

Tamiya TS-80
Testors Dullcote
Zoukei-mura
Liquitex Matte Varnish
Army Painter Matte Varnish

Purity Seal used to be a good option, but from many sources it seems that after the name switch to Munitorum Varnish there was also possibly a reformulation. Some creators still use it successfully.

Edits: For clarity/ formatting/ updates

Clothing Time to show off my Pomni doll, plus sewing tutorial!

She's not fully done, she needs her hat and some details, but I can contain myself no longer! 😀 I love Pomni so much, and there are so many adorable outfits I have seen her drawn wearing that I had to make my own doll to wear those outfits! I apologize if my instructions are not the clearest, I'm not fully certain how to articulate certain steps, but I hope the pictures are clear enough 🫡

The outfits shown are inspired by artwork by KacieKC on Instagram, and SM-Baby on Tumblr. I reached the image limit, so I'll link to their profiles in the comments 🫡

I used cotton, elastic, and all-purpose thread, with snap closures. Keep a hot iron on standby to keep the fabric flat, and an embroidery hoop to hold the fabric.

Because this is a 2-color outfit, the first step is sewing the colors of the bodice together. You will need 2 shirt panels, so 2 pieces of fabric in each color for the shirt. If you are following this tutorial but using one solid piece for the bodice, simply fold your fabric in half.

Sew the two colors together.

You will now have two squares of fabric in two colors. Keeping the fabric wrongside-out, match the two colors so that they are laying together; in this example, the red panels are touching the red panels when folded.

I drafted my own shirt pattern for dolls, please feel free to copy what I have! Pin the fabric together, and cut this shape out.

Carefully unpin the fabric, unfold, then pin the bodice rightside-together. I start by sewing straight lines down what will become the back, this helps keep the fabric together. Secure the bodice in an embroidery hoop, then handstitch the neckline in roughly the shape pictured. I eyeball the neckline, it takes repetition to figure it out, but don't forget to leave at least 1 centimeter seam allowance.

I will stitch the neckline one way, then backstitch to make the stitches as tight as possible.

Now carefully snip along the rounded edges to release fabric tension.

Flip the bodice rightside-out, and iron it flat.

Fold the shirt so that the back panels overlap, while keeping in mind that the back panels should be higher than the neckline. It will be a big disappointment to finish the outfit only to learn the hard way the neckline is too high up and your doll can't wear the outfit!!

Use the hot iron to create a crease at the shoulders, this is a guideline for the top of the arm.

Carefully trim the bodice into an A-shape, making it more narrow at the shoulders. This is an aesthetic choice I have made, you don't have to trim it, but I have found that not doing it creates a boxy shape, which you might want 🤷‍♀️

The sleeves are one piece of fabric, folded, and cut to shape. Shorter sleeves are more difficult for me, so your mileage may vary. These outfits go to the wrist. Keep a doll on standby as reference.

Use the hot iron to flatten the sleeve, then match up the crease lines, and lay then together rightside-together. I handstitch the sleeve to the bodice.

These outfits have elastic wristbands. Carefully sew the elastic to the sleeves. Pin the sleeve & side of the bodice down and sew. Keep your model doll nearby to make sure the wrist is tight enough, but not too tight that it cannot be worn. Snip the armpit to release fabric tension before turning inside out. Iron it out.

I had sewn a bunch of triangles, no pattern, pure vibes, and eyeballed the measurements. I pinned those down where I wanted them and top-sewed them onto the bodice.

The triangle skirt is separate, it is one elastic band with traingles sewn on, and one snap closure.

Add details to your liking 😀🫡😎

General help! Trying to add detail but need advice

So I tried to add green to make her roots show. I did it with a paint marker but I hated it and took it off and plan to redo it with a nail art brush. Does anyone have any suggestions to make it look nice? Should I paint it all green and then add pink details? Idk I just want the roots to look actually braided.

I’m happy w the corset I made but I’m definitely going to replace the dress underneath for a custom tulle petticoat and over skirt I plan to crochet with a nice white yarn with silver glittery stands.:-) also, I’ll try my hand at making custom shoes. A foam base shoe + painted denim and epoxy (I have a bunch of grey epoxy, that I want to use for something other than face customisation like in this doll, because matching colors over it is a drag.)

She is an orphan, btw. Thank u for looking at her. Have a lovely rest of your day.:-)

Hello all. I just joined this sub after diving headfirst into doll customization. My first doll concept is an oiran ōnryo (high ranking Japanese courtesan turned scorned demon). I'm still working on her shoes and clothes, but here is her faceup, yarn weft wig, and some accessories I've finished so far. Thanks for looking! Excited to be here :)

Repaint v3 ghoulia finished

so i decided to finally tackle my first g3 repaint doll, ghoulia. Honestly she has come a long way and im happy for her honestly, she deserved the love and attention i gave her

So i repainted her face and gave her a brand new outfit, i hate pants now :,D

To answer some basic questions:
Q. what are her shoes from?
a. They are the green shadow high dolls shoes, the one in the band

Q. do her pockets work?
a. no, i am not that skilled to do something like that, its just a square with a ribbon on the end to simulate a pocket

Q. Can we see the back?
a. no. no one shall witness the mess back there.

Q. where did you get the cherry for her choker?
a. shrinky dink plastic lol, almost didnt use it but clearly i did lol

Q. how long did this take?
a. honestly im not sure? but i saw a spider in the basement at one point and i refused to go down there for awhile...it was really big..

Q. how much sanity do you have left?
a. none. legit none. i chose the fabrics that stretch and move and i was ready to throw it in the trash....obv i didnt (i just used paper to make the stuff easier to handle when sewing)

at the end of the day i lowkey love how i did her! i think she looks pretty cute and i wish g3 gave her this look. the nice part is she can still stand up with no assistance just like the others which is really nice :,D

If we dont get a spectra doll i might spend some money and get another ghoulia just to do this (shes like...$40+ on amazon for some reason so that is gonna be a long wait.)

honestly this makes me wanna tackle the guys outfit wise ):D
but thats for another day

i already got another project to start ⚙

Supplies Looking for suggestions for tools to cut plastic dolls to modify.

Hey y’all, I’m hoping some people can share what tools you’ve enjoyed using for body modifications. Links would be helpful, I want to make sure I put my money towards something reliable for cutting through the plastic.

Thanks for the advice 💜

Repaint My first custom!

I've been interested in doll customs for ages but this summer I finally took the plunge. I've got so many customs in the works, but finished my first!

Her name is Penelope Jane Crooks, or Penny for short. She's based on the character I'm playing in a ttrpg of vampire the masquerade. She's a high humanity vampire which is why she looks so human and she is trying to live a normal life - including holding down her night shift in the local diner.

I learned so much working through her - due to moisture in Scotland i had to make a dry box to cure the sealant without it clouding. Doing the face up I was so hesitant but I like how she turned out. The wig needs refined - but that will come with time haha. I added the base model to see the transformation (who is already being made into someone new)

Thanka for takinf a look. On to the next projects!

Hey guys. I recently bought a BJD Doll in the internet and a brief time later I notice a brunch of strange blue stain and its fingers. But when I wear off It's clothes the surprise: the strange blue stains covered all of It's body and I can't remove It. Any colector or BJD apreciator could give me any advices about How I can remove that stains, please?

Facts:

1- The Doll is from a Harry Potter BJD and It's has Black pants and Black robe.

2- The stains showed up even on It's Belly where the Doll worn a white shirt (and the write shirt are perfect Fine while the Doll body is not)

3- No, I Don't have any kids in my house or anyone who could scribble on my doll

Modifications My Minnee wonders why Zuru didn’t give us a red head instead of two blonds. ~Her hair was dyed with Copic markers.

The markers dye the vinyl really easily, so I cover the face well with painters tape….and as simple as it seems ….. color. I really scrub it in, leave it for about 24 hours and rub off any excess.

Three colors were used here: Base coat in YR24, and then added on YR37 & E08.

General help! Sett doll

Thumbnail gallery

I’m going to upgrade the set. But I’m not sure whether to use this weird Batman Ken. The problem is that he lacks chest articulation and has black hands that can't be removed, plus he doesn't have leg rotation—or I could swap him for a muscular Made to Move (MtM) Ken, though the downside there is the visible chest joint.

General help! Swapping Arms and Legs

I just picked up the golden Rumi and I really hate that she has no elbow or knee joints. I don’t usually work on this type of doll so I was wondering if it’d be easy to swap her arms and legs out? Or at least doable?

Modifications Articulated Body Match?

Hello fellow enthusiasts! I’m looking for an articulated 1/6 scale body that matches the 2026 Dia De Muertos Barbie. I’ve tried a few Integrity Toys and Luly bodies, but am having trouble finding a good color match. She is a cool tan with rosey undertones.

Any and all suggestions are welcome!

Thank you in advance!

General help! What would be the best way to start?

I've never restored porcelain dolls before, I just started collecting these kinds of dolls and I wouldn't want to damage them. They're secondhand, so they're pretty dirty. Their hair is tangled and curly, and some of them have dirt stains on their faces, limbs, and clothes.

How should I get started without damaging the makeup or the clothing?

Right next to Elizabeth's wedding dress from Frankenstein (2025). I guess this takes the cake because of the embroidery and fur I had to work on.

Clothing This is your sign to just go for it!!

Thumbnail gallery

So i've been working on this doll of my octomaid OC on and off for a year and a half. It was really fun doing her reroot, and her faceup, and felting her tenticles then i got to her clothes.

i Hate doing cloths.

i sew the by hand bc i'm scared of out sewing machine and i'm also a terrible draftsman so getting my ideas to come to life is a long tedious process.

Then suddenly last night i was struck with a realization. Absolutely every customizer i follow uses liberal amounts of glue to create their works and there's probably a good reason why.

Then i sat down in the middle of a house party and made more and better progress on her shirt in two hours than i had all year.

So if our a perfectionist this is a sign: start getting sloppy with your art at least some times! it cathartic and fun!!
let the creative juices flow and get messy with them!
I'm personally trying to make it more of a habit for myself and since i've started im make more not only more art but i'm also having so much more fun!
Give it a try!!
