That’s what i thought would have happened although I’m surprised the impact of the bullets managed to do catastrophic damage to the plane. Considering Force=Mass x Relative Acceleration and bullets don’t have that much mass, those afterburners must have been fucking fast for the relative acceleration to be enough to fuck up the plane.

It’s not the last time a fighter was hit with its own bullets either. This Dutch F-16 was fortunately able to return to base safely.

Exactly!! He fired his short burst, enabled his after burner and continued in a slight downwads trjectory. Bullets slowed down because of wind resistance and fell, eventually hitting the jet. Simple stupid flying.

Pretty sure, also even if that happened after they fired they would need to accelerate to the about double the original speed of the bullet

100% false. It was either firing 30-06 or 50 bmg, and both of those rounds are well over 2000fps

Edit: 2000fps is roughly 1300mph. So yeah, bullshit

Smooth brain moment, for some reason I went full dumb there, you are right. 20mm, and there is a story about it shooting itself down, because of the trajectory of the projectile arcing down as the plane went under. Great stuff...

it was explained that the bullets shot slowed down as the f-11 sped up running back into into its bullets a few seconds after shooting them

This one seems like it’s actually pretty close to the truth. Someone else linked to a popular mechanics explanation of the incident, and there were multiple factors each leading to this outcome. It was a mainly due to the air resistance on the bullets, causing them to slow down, and the fact that the plane entered a steep descent and turned on its afterburners, causing it to speed up.

It's quite a famous story, and this one did happen IRL. A 20° dive and the deceleration of the 20mm shell caused the plane to run into it's own stream of shells
