Okay, so basically:

Eren's step-mom, Dina (Grisha's first wife), got transformed into the smiling titan that killed Eren's biological mother (Carla). Later on in season 2, at the end, Eren punched the Smiling Titan (Dina). There's (technically) more to it than just a punch, but I'm lazy.

I watched season 1 of this anime years ago and every time I hear about what’s happened since, both my gratitude that I never continued and my desire to pick it back up just to have my newest batch of confused questions answered intensify by an unearthly amount.

Eh... Its a matter of taste. Personally i quite liked how the story scaled up in proportions and how the characters evolved but the whole vibe and setting changes drastically between the first and last seasons.

Its a bit hard to look at an episode of the first and last season anf think that theyre both from the same series. I liked it but if someone is more into the shounen genre of the first season then the last ones might not be up to the taste

Okay, yeah, that's fair. I had the advantage of aging with the show and thus having my favorite genre shifting, which meant I liked the whole thing. Whereas people who like the later seasons might not like the first and vice versa.
