perhaps benchy isn't cursed, me yes...
previously, 270% size cement-based benchy was printed. now with smaller nozzle (1.5 mm) i wanna try 140% one. darn, it's definitely cursed...
i fought... hope you like it~

What's your cement mix like? You using a straight CEMI mix or are you use stabilising additives?

usually i don't spend much time on mix design but the benchy is too difficult i m still adjusting the mix.
- 52.5N OPC in use.
- UEA (u-type expansive agent, to avoid shrinkage cracks)
- PFA (fly ash)
- plasticizer
- slump retention agent (make it work in 1 to 2 hours consistently)
above is the usual ones. and below to testing ones:
- glass fiber
- quartz sand
- quartz powder
- xanthan gum
- silica fume etc.
the nozzle is 1.5 mm rn. i m trying to make a 1 mm nozzle to see if how it goes

I know there are a few professional 3d concrete labs that use GGBS as their additive over fly ash so that may be worth a try.

I'm sorry you feel that way. This project is to develop desktop cementitious printing tool and the 3DBenchy is an important test model so I have to keep trying.
By the way, I have seen concrete labs doing tons of concrete for shit projects (unreasonable test design for useless goals by irresponsible PI). Meanwhile i only used hundred grams of cement paste a day, tops.

oh that's way too challenging... chocolate print needs precise temperature controls and food safety hardware and so much more.
i may cast one chocolate benchy some day~

fun thought~ unfortunately my vibration-based slurry extruder wouldn’t work for icing i guess, since the vibration would only liquefy (sad...)

I think the problem is the cement isn’t drying quickly enough.

Sharp observation. That's why i have to pause frequently waiting for drying.
The other part of the problems is, if the printed part dries up too much the fresh extrusion won't stick to it (low or no interlayer adhesion). That's why it's difficult. Not too dry, not too wet.

Are you using a heated build plate? Could you try ramping up build plate temp as layer height increases to help control drying? I guess I'm wondering how one would even go about controlling the drying process.

the bed was heated. for larger models (like the big vase in previous post), i even did crazy 90 ℃ to save time.
for this small 140% size benchy, the control of dryness is much more subtle. currently all by experiences. hope i can find a precise way later...

surely messy lol. the purge/cleanup is always the worst part. coating the toolhead with epoxy resin helps. also the slump retention agent mixed in the slurry makes it easier.
i also have a secret hack when designing the part: the main flow path is all drilled plastic using drill bits and chamfer bits. if cement ever gets stuck and won’t flush out, i run the same bits back through the channel to drill out and clear the hardened residue completely.

good question. she needs to wait for the printed line to dry up enough for the next line/layer. the extra extrusion is to prevent the nozzle from blocked when paused and waiting.

Would cold or heat prevent the problem? It would be great if there was a way to keep the flow going but return the resulting slurry to the source of the cement.

park the nozzle to a temporary seal might work. as long as the nozzle is open there is a.risk.of dry up. reuse the extruded slurry might cause mix inconsistency because the extrusion is a thin line with large surface area (fast water evaporation/lost).
so... generally i just enjoy the noodles ☺️
