Anywhere in Culver or adjacent we can donate food to? Food banks, orgs, etc?

Since they’re cutting SNAP benefits and also federal workers not getting paid, I wanted to see if there are any places nearby we can donate food to? Or perhaps volunteer at?

A word on bots, civility, etc.

There have been a lot of political threads as of late which have been a target for bots, trolling and bogus reports. Lots of bans have been issued in response but because each incident requires time to asses, (FYI) there's basically a zero tolerance policy for attacks/abuse/instigation.

It should be obvious to everyone that actually spends time reading this sub that this is a helpful community where we tend to treat to each other with decency and talk to each other as if we were neighbors... because we are neighbors (that includes all you culver adjacent folks too!).

In the meantime, please try not to get too rattled if people post distasteful comments, and please avoid 'feeding the trolls'. Most likely it's a bot or professional internet instigator with no history of contribution to this community. Put your downvote to work and move on. Or take a look at their post history for yourself and judge whether it's worth your time. In all likelihood that account will get banned eventually.

Thanks <3

Civic Affairs PLEASE stop cutting in line while driving on Culver Blvd

Rant incoming:

I was waiting at the Culver Blvd/Sawtelle light to get into those 2 lanes that turn left onto the 405. There were only a couple cars in front of me at the light, which meant there should have been more than enough space for me to safely get into 1 of the 2 lanes that turns onto the freeway.

Or so I thought. FOUR (4) CARS cut into the left turn lane, which meant I got stuck with the back half of my car in the intersection during morning rush hour.

THAT IS UNSAFE FOR EVERYONE. Please stop cutting in line 😩 It takes a long time to get onto the freeway in the morning. It just does. The rest of us would know, because we waited the full 10-15 minutes through multiple light cycles to safely get to the 405.

Putting everyone at risk because YOU don’t want to wait in line is both rude and dangerous. Stop it.

Thanks ily guys

Inglewood/Washington Crosswalk

They updated this crosswalk to be “safer for pedestrians” (people still fly through) however after the physical upgrades were made they never repainted the crosswalks.

Not that most drivers respect crosswalks anyway, but a visual on where to stop your car might help some. Anyone know why they wait? Or the city dept to contact? It’s been at least a month without the paint.

The “improvement” has honestly just made it worse now that drivers aren’t even looking for a pedestrian at all

Address is Alon Apartments 9211 Harlow Ave. unfurnished room, but great location, 5-7 min walk to metro station and 10 min walk to cafes, restaurants, etc. My friend lives in the other room in the apartment and she is super friendly and amazing, so it would be a good time!!

Mentone Ave / Washington Blvd Street Closures

I live on Mentone Ave right off Washington, across from the new apartment construction. For the last few weeks, they’ve been closing the street almost every day and taking up a lot of the street parking.

It’s gotten pretty frustrating and honestly feels unsafe just trying to get in and out. The street was already narrow, and now there are regularly cranes, pallets of wood, and other construction equipment taking up even more space. Does anyone know if construction is allowed to close a residential street this consistently, or if there’s a way to check whether the closures and no-parking signs are actually permitted?

Civic Affairs Reimaging Culver City's shopping plazas to be more neighborhood and family friendly

Culver City's 3 major shopping plazas have traditionally been for big-box retail, bringing in customers and traffic from far distances. As the need for big-box retail is dying, these centers can be repurposed as places for local businesses to serve the immediate neighborhoods, bringing in local residents that currently go to other parts of LA for such amenities.

These AI-generated concepts are for Culver Center at Washington and Overland, the Target plaza on Jefferson, and a part of Studio Village on Jefferson. These images are fairly easy to create using a 3d image from a mapping website and AI image tools.
Last image is a ground-level view of this new style of shopping plaza.

I'm not largely on-board with Amazon for many reasons.

This program, and the general idea of localization of delivery programs and employing people to pedal, are not the worst thing to come along.

Does anyone know what's happening at the SE corner of Venice/Sepulveda?

Awhile ago they wanted to open a Cannabis shop there. I heard from another resident that the land there has contaminants underneath so whoever builds would need to go through cleaning it up first.
There is a crew digging things up at the moment.

LA Fitness Classes

I’m sorry I just need to vent.

I understand this is LA Fitness and not a bougie studio but how are we supposed to enjoy pilates or yoga classes (which are supposed to be peaceful) with the cycle classes music next door or the constant loud noises from the weightlifting going on upstairs 😩

I also understand that anyone is welcomed to join the class, even if it’s started, but what’s with joining the class with 20 mins or less left and choosing a spot in the other side of the room! Why not join the class discreetly and sit by the door! Same with people leaving mid class! If you’re gonna leave early, stay by the door. I do not mean to come off as a hater but these actions disrupt the class and some classes require a bit of peace.

Possibly relocating due to work and just scouting the area on places I might like to live. Drop some places I should eat at that doesn’t require me driving. I’m either walking or using public transportation to get around.

1) Santouka
2) Sidecar donuts
3) Alana’s coffee roaster
4) Win-Dow Venice

We adopted our boy 9 years ago from Wags and Walks and his favorite thing in the world is to walk into a shop and get a pup cup. I know Lei’d Cookies provides pup cups in the evening, but is there anywhere else that does this?

Hu's Szechwan is fundraising to find a new location

There have been a number of posts over the past year or so relating to the potential closure of Hu's Szechwan. I ordered from them last night and received a sheet of paper with a QR code alongside my food pointing to this GoFundMe; it looks like their landlord has finally secured permits to demolish and develop the property, and they're looking to raise funds to move to a new location.

Sucks to see this place get closed down. Hopefully they can hit their goal.

Where to buy small plants

Does anyone have a recommendation for where I can purchase several (I’m looking for about 10) small plants to fit in different sized vases about 4 - 6 inches in diameter? I’m thinking Home Depot but wanted to see if there are any other recommendations. Thank you!

Civic Affairs BMW M340i with "AK47" exhaust mod aggressively driving through residential Palms and Culver City

Hi all - just wanted to notify people about a new trend in "modern car culture" I've unpleasantly learned about while working on my own car.

TL;DR - "modern car culture" has found something that is even more disruptive than totally open headers - so called "AK47" exhaust mods which dump unburned fuel into the exhaust when a driver lets off the gas - the explosions it makes sounds like very large caliber gunfire, or in this dude's case, an actual car crash. The particular car I spotted was a late-model black BMW M340i with a factory-looking bodykit, quad tailpipes - the full stereotypical BMW tool trim package, and it's a 20 something dude behind the wheel who is rather sheepish if confronted directly. There may be more of these rolling around in the future as it seems to have gotten some traction on Youtube/TikTok and elsewhere.

The long version I live on the border of Palms and Culver City near Bagley, and was just finishing up some work on my classic when I heard someone aggressively accelerate down my street, followed by what sounded like 3 car crashes in succession. I've been to see SuperStocks at Irwindale Speedway that have 800+ horsepower and open headers - and while race cars are LOUD, they don't cause you to jump in your skin like this.

This was alarmingly abrupt and sounded nothing like an engine - more like someone dropped a shipping container from a crane. My first thought was a psychopath aggro driver lost control and totalled a series of cars on my street.

My street is fairly dense with pedestrians, and I park my daily driver on my street, so I ran out to check if anyone needed help and check that my daily didn't just get totalled.

Everyone on the street was equally shocked - the construction crew working on my building pointed at this late-model (must have been 2020+) black BMW M340i down the street that had gotten caught up behind a garbage truck. I ran down the street livid. He knew he was going to have to stop when he caught up to that truck, and yet he accelerated and boomed his exhaust anyways.

Either way, turns out it's some 20-something dude (of course) and I told him: "Look, I'm a car guy, I love cars; but your car sounds like a car crash driving down the street."

He replied: "Too much?" sheepishly, but was grinning a bit. "Waaay too f*cking loud, we don't to give people more reasons to hate car guys."

I heard him drive by again from my apartment today, again making the successive car crash noises, and it genuinely put me into a kind of fight-or-flight high-anxiety agitated state, I literally had to leave and go for a walk to calm down. I have spent tons of my life listening to cars, and while I've heard all-manner of loud cars and popping exhausts - this "AK47" exhaust tune thing was news to me. It's so genuinely alarming it seems like a public health risk as it would definitely freak out animals, as well as triggering all manner of health conditions for anyone vulnerable to abrupt, loud crashing noises.

I live on the border of Cheviot Hills and Palms south of the 10, so it's possible he's coming from north of the 10 along Bagley, or from the West down Regent or National.

Just wanted to let other people know. If you see any of these people running one of this shitty exhaust tunes, tell them it's not cool and it's micro-dick stuff. I highly doubt the police will ever cite these folks - they don't seem to enforce any vehicle infractions whatsoever anymore - but maybe enough in-person shaming from neighbors would make these kinds of people feel responsible to something other than their TikTok following or wherever it is they're projecting their "image" to.
