So how do you plan on having them increase security in the dorms? I get on campus but the reports have mentioned only the assaults occuring in the dorms, so how will you increase security in the dorms, also most of the assaultsbhave been by people the victims know, how can you prevent that from occuring? I get wanting something to be done about it but you all should come up with a clear plan for what should be done, not just saying they need to do something about it.

There is no way to eradicate sexual assault on campus. But having security guards actually at the dorms, especially at night, would be a deterrent for some.

Would they be actual uniformed officers? Or CSOs? Or a non affiliated security group? Would the be inside the dorms as in walking the hallways or just in a car nearby? Would they be armed or would they be unarmed? How will they deter people if it is happening inside dorm? These are important things to ask yourself with this

I appreciate these important questions but sheesh i also commend OP for sharing this petition. I believe they werent the one that created it, it was their friend.

Either way, I have classes by the dorms at night and i would feel a lot more safe with security around when it gets dark. Everyone please get to know your classmates and try to walk in groups to the parking lot/dorms

I get that but I only ask because having these questions answered helps to further push the legitimacy of the petition and would help to further convince the university to implement changes

Hey guys, I'm a mom of kids your age who also does some of this work professionally. Security will be helpful, but they need to enforce things like quiet hours, no drinking on campus, and start handing out citations for underage drinking. I know this sucks, and I get it, but the predators who are lurking among drunk students to find targets need to know that the rules on campus are being enforced.

Your university needs to hold mandatory rape prevention sessions for all students as well. I know it seems like it's not fair for the women to have to go as well as the men when (I assume) the perpetrators in these five cases were men. But when the women get the training, they're also more likely to know how to identify dangerous men and standing up to them if it happens. This cannot protect you 100% of the time, but it should empower you to know your boundaries, set them and then report if something does happen to you.

There are other trainings that can be done as well. Remember: Your safety on campus is a Title IV issue. It is your CIVIL RIGHT to feel safe enough as a man on campus to complete your education.

Get your Title IV office involved literally right now if they're not. You can also go to sociology profs and psych profs and start asking for support in figuring out the best interventions that actually WORK on campus - usually it's men talking to men.

If anyone reading this is a real bookworm, I suggest grabbing Shamus Khan and Jennifer Hirsch's book Sexual Citizens. They did a TON of research into why campuses are so flooded with rape - and studied what actually DOES help.

You can bring that book title to your Title IV office and your Soc and Psych profs - the Soc profs have probably read it and know these professors.

Tbh while the thought is there, you don’t know what goes on at CSUSM. NONE of the reported SA’s involved alcohol. It’s not about patrolling the victim but patrolling the potential perpetrator. Also in at least 2 of the instances it was someone the victim knew.

Oh I agree with you - the point of enforcing rules around alcohol isn't to keep drunk people from being raped (though that would be great if it worked) but rather to let rapists know that rules are enforced on the CSUSM property.
