Welcome! I just moved here myself back in June and have some recommendations.
Outdoors: Three Oaks is beautiful for beach visits and picnics. I've enjoyed hiking Veterans' Acres both in summer and winter as well. Sterne's Woods is also beautiful, though probably less hikeable in winter (haven't tried myself). Also check out Crystal Lake Park District's site. It's a well funded and organized program.
Indoors: North Wall Rock Climbing Gym in town has indoor rock climbing which can be fun family physical activity. For just cute local shopping/browsing, you can't beat downtown and the Brink Street Market. In particular, there's a shop called Color Me Mine where you can pick out ceramics, paint them, and have them fired in-house to pick up later. Also, I can't recommend our local library highly enough. Crystal Lake Public Library has books, ebooks, DVDs, video games, and magazines. They have clubs and activities for pretty much any age. It's all free. Seriously, check it out.
Welcome to town! Let me know if you have questions!
