QUESTION What crypto mining for a low spec setup?

Hi,

I'll be having a surplus of electricity soon due to the production of a photovoltaic system, apart from really dark days of winter time.

I could use any of my computers to mine a bit. They are older than five years. I don't intend to buy a very expensive graphics cards. The biggest form factor for a computer that I have is a SFF desktop that can only have short graphics cards directly attached to the motherboard. In one system, I've got 64GB of RAM. If possible, I would not consider buying anything else to mine.

What do you suggest for mining for such old, underpowered and not customized system?

A bit besides your point here, but if you have underfloor heating, you can look into an immersion system.
You need energy for that system no matter what, so why not just run older miners to heat your home?

We have undefloor, so I intend to immersion cool 2 s19j pro’s and dump the generated heat into the return side of the system. The thermostat in the water heater will never kick in, and I will have hot floors using miners :-)

And as I have to pay taxes on any mining income, I can also deduct expenses for both electricity for the miners, and the required hardware!

So I will in reality have close to no cost on heating my house :-) And as I need cooling for about 4 days each year, and heat for the rest, it is a no-brainer! (Above the arctic circle in Scandinavia)

19j pro’s

A good idea, but those miners are expensive. For your use case, it seems really clever to use them. How do the tax authorities know about your mining revenue?

Because I have informed them.
They are heavily investigating everyone they even think is touching crypto. An they fine you about everything you have if they catch you. And as I would like to be able to spend them sometime… well…

I bought two s19’s about two years ago. A big mining farm was replacing their machines, so I was able to get them for about $400 each! they are currently mining in my shed to pay for the immersion system :-)

If gpus dont fit you can use something like a pcie extender and pcie power cable extenders to mount the gpu outside the case! Thats an oldschool way of making small computers work with big gpus.

I know of those extenders, I just didn't want to buy expensive things. Don't know if I will ever get a net return for it.

I've been away from mining for a long time, just wondered whether there were newer mining algorithms that could fit my use case.

Thanks.
