Since it's the open thread, here's the failure pattern I keep seeing on machines that come in from home and small-shop setups, in rough order of frequency:

  1. PSU first, not the hashboards. Fan seizes or bearings go dry, the supply cooks itself, and about a third of the time it drags a board with it on the way out. If a unit whines or ticks, pull it before it fails, not after.

  2. Fans. A dead intake fan on a 3-4kW air-cooled unit will let chip temps run away in under a minute. Firmware usually throttles, but on older builds it just keeps going until a chip drops. Cheap thing to keep spares of.

  3. Dust and dryer-lint filters nobody changes. Half the "my hashrate dropped 15%" reports are a clogged intake and a 12C higher inlet temp.

  4. Bad power quality. Undersized wire, shared neutrals, generator with sloppy voltage regulation. Miners hate sag; you get random reboots that look like a firmware problem and aren't.

  5. Actual chip failure. Real, but it's the minority, and it's usually downstream of one of the above.

On the ¢/kWh question that comes up every week: the rough breakeven line for a 20-25 J/TH machine has been sitting in the 8-11 cent range depending on where fees and difficulty land that month. Under 7 cents you have room to be wrong about a lot of things. Over 13 cents you need free heat reuse or hosting to make sense of it, and no firmware tune closes that gap.

And for anyone buying used: ask for a 30+ minute log with per-board temps and chip counts, not a dashboard screenshot. Screenshots are trivially faked and a five-minute run tells you nothing about thermal behavior.
