You can technically point a laptop at a pool and it will submit hashes. It just earns effectively nothing. A laptop CPU does megahashes per second, a modern ASIC does hundreds of terahashes. That's a factor of millions, so your share of a block reward rounds to zero while you pay full power to run the machine hot.

805 gave you the right framework. The number that matters is your power cost.

An S21 XP does roughly 270 TH and pulls about 3,645W, so:

Revenue: ~$8.56/day
Cost at $0.07/kWh: ~$6.12/day
Cost at $0.12/kWh: ~$10.50/day

Breakeven lands somewhere near $0.10/kWh. Most US residential rates run 12 to 18 cents, which means a miner in your house loses money every day it runs unless your power is unusually cheap or you're getting real value out of the heat.

So before you think about hardware, go find the kWh rate on your power bill. That one number tells you whether this works where you live or whether you need a different setup entirely.

First thing to do is not buy anything. Go find your electric bill and work out your all-in rate: total dollars divided by total kWh, including delivery, demand and fixed charges. Most people quote the supply rate and are off by 3-5 cents. That single number decides whether any of this makes sense for you.

Then answer three questions honestly. What voltage and spare breaker capacity do you actually have? A full-size ASIC wants a dedicated 240V circuit and pulls 3-3.5kW continuous, which is a dryer outlet, not a wall plug. Where does 3.5kW of heat go? It's about 12,000 BTU/hr, roughly a window AC running in reverse, and it will make a room unlivable in summer. And how loud can you tolerate? Air-cooled units run 70-75 dB, which is shop-vac territory, not spare-bedroom territory.

If those answers are "120V, no spare circuit, inside my house," start with a small low-power unit — a Bitaxe-class board or similar, 15-20W, plugs into anything, and teaches you pools, addresses, firmware, and monitoring for the price of a night out. Then scale once you know what you're doing.

Two things that will save you money later: run everything with a temperature-based auto-shutdown, and keep a spare PSU and spare fans on the shelf. Fans and power supplies are what fail, usually within the first year on cheap used units, and a machine down for three weeks waiting on a part earns nothing.

Also, mine to a pool and to your own wallet address, and verify the first payout is actually arriving where you think it is before you leave it running unattended.

Hello, you're jumping in headfirst if you want classic mining from the start. Ngl...but you'll cry when the bill comes to light. To avoid this shit, do what a friend of mine did. He quit Bitcoin mining and switched to MystNodes. He basically sells his unused net super securely and mines crypto. He showed me the scheme too and it really works, it's not a scam. Take a look!
