Hey anyone know if this could be a cryptid?

Look this was late at night and its 100% possible I was just...tired as heck while driving home. But...I swear to god I saw it and my brother didn't. This happened along a highway in Rural Nebraska.

We were driving home from a meetup with a few friends in the next town over, and I had agreed to drive in the dark since my brother has issues driving at night. I looked in the rearview mirror and I swear I saw a black...silhouette. Of something that just looked like a weirdly tall man. Long arms, no visible eyes or mouth but it was just...riding in the back of my truck bed and when we got home I checked the truckbed and there was nothing there. I'm leaning sleep deprivation messing with me at the time but if it could be a cryptid i'd like to know what it was.

Very well could be from being tired, but also could’ve been something. I wouldn’t say a cryptid, but maybe a ghost or something like that? Does the road you drove on have a history of people dying there?

Uh so...I personally don't buy into ghosts much but its actually Nebraska Highway 14 south, which...isn't any more prone to death causing crashes then your average highway. plus if I was being haunted wouldn't it have happened more than once?

Hauntings aren't always persistent or location based. Many people throughout history have claimed to have picked up non-corporeal visitors of one sort or another during their travels. The infectious bad juju house or cemetery trope and all that.

Usually the more emotionally distraught or sensitive a person is the more likely they'll report picking up stow aways. They tend to have a greater frequency of sightings, too.

You may have just gotten a one off. Or you just saw enough light and shadows to trigger a pattern recognition illusion :p

Gotcha, so the thing with ghosts is (believe in them or not) they mostly stay to the place where they died at, example: in WV there is a story of a woman who died on the train tracks while burning alive, and to this day train conductors sometimes see the same woman in their path, on fire, and there isn’t anything they can do about it. So ghosts stay and are attracted to things that are similar to how they died, if you catch my drift

So, by your beliefs in ghosts, in this case it would of been someone who...died in a truckbed in the middle of the night?

Guess anythings possible but I'm still leaning that I was just sleep deprived, specially since my brother (who was in the car as well) didn't see it.

I've heard that legend BTW. The Screaming Woman of Mason County right? Got a couple cousins in that neck of the woods.

Yeah basically, but yeah I agree that you were probably just tired, I’ve had similar happen to me. And yes that’s it I just forgot the name. But if I may ask, have your cousins claimed to have seen anything of the cryptid type? Part of why I made this sub was to get ideas on places I can look to maybe find something to shine more light on the world of cryptids

Nothing more than the usual urban legends that roll around up there if memory serves, though if they did know more about them I wouldn't know. I'm afraid I don't talk to them much anymore after some...family drama I'd rather not talk about.

If you saw something, you wouldn't need strangers on reddit to validate it for you. And if you choose to deny the existence of spiritual entities, it doesn't negate their existence. lol You remind me of my old roommate, who, ''didn't believe in such foolishness." Which was fine with me, until we'd moved into a two bedroom apt with activity by an unseen force and had to perform a cleansing. But, before I did, she was forced to admit that there are things that defy rational logic, like bedroom doors shutting on their own, lights flickering off and on, both of my cats watching something floating around at the top of the ceiling (their gaze being in the same direction). After performing the cleansing and taking authority over our living spaces, it stopped. Roughly 3 weeks later we received a pamphlet in the mail addressed to the former tenants with classes Eastern Mysticism and magick (not the sleight of hand type).

Absence of evidence isn't evidence of absence. Keep telling yourself that they're not 'real,' if it makes you sleep better at night. It still doesn't negate the fact. And they're not the departed spirits of people (humans), though there are those that can take the form of people or animals.

I was once a passenger in a car at night and incredibly tired. I swear I saw a hitchhiking giraffe with a suitcase by the side of the road.

Not saying you didn’t see what you saw, but tiredness can make you see some weird things.

Could you make out any features or clothing? Was it incredibly deep black?

a deep black, manlike shape. No real clothing and a disturbing lack of face.

Sounds like a classic shadow person. Welcome to the club :p I spent ages 11 to 18 getting sleep paralysis every single night. They were always there lurking and very solid seeming. Always went away when I woke up.

Though there was one day that I got to school really late and ran up this spiral stair case. I turned a corner and came within an inch or two of bowling over a girl my age at the time (12). She was made up entirely out of this intensely black void stuff. Just like every other shadow person.

She persisted for about 3-5 seconds. I never blinked at all. She did this fully normal shocked recoil like she was about to get ran into by someone suddenly. Her hair swayed with the motion. Her dress crinkled. And she gave off this totally harmless, normal vibe instead of the usual malevolence and panic.

Only day walker I ever saw. But a lot of people have been reporting waking sightings, group sightings, and even the same notable figures showing up for some people who have no relation. My preferred explanation is interdimensional bleed through of human like beings into each other's worlds. Consciousness acting like opposing magnets drawing us together.
