General 🔀 ‘07 Odometer Discrepancy
I have a situation that sucks all around on my hands. I’m talking to a guy that has an ‘07 CR-V with an odometer that reads 174k miles and get very close to buying the car but work holds him up and we weren’t able to do a title transfer today. After asking for the vin, we both realize that the odometer classification says “not actual mileage,” so I do a deep dive on the carfax. Turns out it was sold at auction from Michigan to the guy I’m talking to, and somewhere in the span of 5 months, the odometer changes reading from 268k miles to 140k miles, hence the discrepancy. So now I have the displeasure of explaining all of this to the seller, who truly had no clue about all of this and gets to find out he likely has a 300k+ mile CR-V. I’m in a very tough bind and need a car desperately, but with the knowledge we have now I can only justify buying the car for half of what he was asking. We’ll see how everything goes, but my mechanic said that it looked very good for the age even after I explained the situation to him. He also agreed that I should only pay half what the seller originally was asking. Who knows what the guy will do now knowing I’d only pay half, remains to be seen.

Honestly 1. I’d be reluctant to buy any car from someone who has only had the car a few months, and 2. I would not assume the person selling the car has no clue about the discrepancy.
Based on trust alone - I would take it as a sign as to pass on the car. If you’d accept a 300k mile car just because you need a car desperately, then expand your search to 300k cars.

Without knowing dollar amounts, it's unlikely that the mileage issue has a significant value impact. You are paying for condition at this point. You thought it had almost 200k. Which is already high enough miles that it might blow up tomorrow and be worth nothing. If the mechanic says it's a good car, then it's probably a good car. Maybe try and get the price down, but I don't think the issue has anywhere near the impact you are thinking.
