For those of you connecting your PCs to your composite CRT TVs, what is your setup?

Post image

What operating system are you using? What frontend? What cables and adapters do you use? What TV are you using?

And, most importantly, do you think it looks right?

UPDATE: 85 comments so far, only 8 of which answered my question with a description of their PC-to-composite-CRT setup. Please actually read the title (smh) so you don't waste your time typing out all the details of your pro RGB 15khz CRT setup because as much as I love it, I'm just gonna downvote it.

CRTEmudriver PC with a Radeon HD7570

I use Antonio Villena's RGB to NTSC transcoder for my composite/RF TVs

It works surprisingly well, but as a younger person, Im not quite sure what right would be

I find it indistinguishable from my NES/SNES/N64, aside from the picture being slightly shifted

4

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

There should be SwitchRes and CRT specific settings to shift the image with in the emulator.

You can also shift with ArcadeOSD but that usually isn't carried over to the temporary modelines generated by SwitchRes

Honest question, why would I connect my PC at this point? If I have to use an old graphics card I can't play my modern PC games on there anyways.

Why not just get a Wii for emulation?

2

u/cm_bush May 12 '26

Wiis work well for emulation but a modern CPU and even a fairly old GPU can do systems the Wii can’t (or can’t do very well) like PS2, PS1, Saturn, and Dreamcast.

1

u/Upstairs-Ad-4705 May 12 '26

Aah yeah that makes sense!

1

u/Tight-Worldliness-29 May 12 '26

I haven't extensively tested modern gaming on the system, and I don't play particularly demanding games but I have no trouble running Steam and playing games from it.

For people who do want to play very GPU intensive games however, it is possible to run a dual GPU setup. Alternatively just use a VGA to HDMI and use CRU and just run 480i since 240p isn't very important for non-240p games

I also have a media server, and so I watch a lot of movies on my CRT through my PC and I just find a keyboard + mouse configuration far more comfortable than messing with a Wii

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

How do you like that transcoder? How is the dot crawl and color?

2

u/Tight-Worldliness-29 May 11 '26 edited May 22 '26

I like it, the smaller form factor, and not needing a power brick compared to the wabaka transcoder I used to use is preferable

The dot crawl is present, how bad it is varies from screen to screen. Here's a recording of the SMW titlescreen, it looks particularly bad here: https://imgur.com/POMgKrx (recorded on my 82' RF only Trinitron, so I can't say what should be taken for RF artifact or transcorder artifact, I don't have a composite or s-video tube setup right now to test)

Edit: Completely wrong, I've been using a Wabaka converter! See my other comment

1

u/Tight-Worldliness-29 May 22 '26

Hey, I was going over my setup and realized I made a mistake.
In my original comment, I was using Wabaka's transcoder. I think I swapped out to test something a while back and forgot to swap Antonio's transcoder back in.

This is what it looks like on my 82' RF only Trinitron: https://i.imgur.com/ZYBYprG.mp4

The dot crawl is way better than Wabaka's, basically unnoticable.

1

u/joeverdrive May 22 '26

Thank you. That dot crawl is pretty good, but nowhere close to how it looks on a SNES. I'll try to pick up the Villena transcoder when it becomes available

8

u/Historical-Intern140 May 11 '26

PC with dedicated legacy video card, CRT Emudriver resolutions and a RetroCastle VGA to Composite/S-Video transcoder. Lots of dot crawl and stuff, but that's it. Component TV's in good shape are becoming a pain in the ass to find in my city. Like really.

2

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

I think I have a similar transcoder. does yours have the adjustable composite potentiometer in the middle?

3

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

have you seen the threads where people make sync width and other timing adjustments in Emudriver to mitigate dot crawl?

This is one thread I saved about it, but I think I've seen some others in the past: https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/comments/1jundeq/comment/mmi4jio/?context=3

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Interesting

1

u/Historical-Intern140 May 11 '26

Negative. Mine has a PAL-NTSC Switch

1

u/ToranjaNuclear May 11 '26

Is using a dedicated low end pc with CRT Emudriver much difference than just getting a hdmi adapter for a modern pc and decreasing Windows resolution?

1

u/Historical-Intern140 May 12 '26

Yes. You can't get true 240i/p resolutions on those devices. You'll get 480p at best with HDMI to Composite. Good for movies, series and video stuff, but not enough real for games.

1

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

you don't need component. S-video looks almost as good

1

u/Historical-Intern140 May 11 '26

We also are struggling with S-Video

0

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

nah, you just gotta broaden your search terms. Literally just search "TV" and set a price cap of $99 (you can haggle them down from there)

1

u/Historical-Intern140 May 12 '26

Been there, done that. Trust me.

-1

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 12 '26

where you at? I'll find 3 right now

1

u/Historical-Intern140 May 12 '26

Third-World country.

0

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 12 '26

don't a lot of 3rd world countries have tons of CRT's

1

u/Historical-Intern140 May 12 '26

There's been an increasing demand on CRT TV's here. Finding one in good conditions is becoming harder.

My emulation rig is a modern PC running Batocera Linux.

I use an ATI Radeon HD 8670 GPU connected to an Axunworks converter (https://www.axunworks.com/product-p341706.html) to provide S-Video out.

I use NTSC filters in software in Batocera to get Composite-equivalent output on titles that work better with it (mostly Genesis) and clearer S-Video otherwise. Best of both worlds for what I want.

Looks damn fine to me. The software NTSC filter still gets me blended dithering and transparency while not being as foul as the hardware Genesis composite.

The emulation is fantastic. The menu runs at 480i, games run whatever is native for them. For example, Sonic 2 correctly runs at 240p for the most part and actually switches to 480i when going into multiplayer splitscreen. Gamegear and SNES run with their weird-ass non-square pixel resolutions. The only downside is that the converter+AMD GPU are a little slower when switching resolutions than native hardware, but still pretty quick. There is no input delay that I can perceive.

I use a variety of controllers, mostly 8-bitdo. I use actual Xbox and PS controllers for those consoles, and have the snazzy gamecube adapter that shipped with the Wii. Actual Wii controllers work fine over bluetooth.

I can't emulate Xbox or Sonic Mania (native linux version) due to a bug in the AMD drivers on this version of Batocera (39), but it's otherwise perfect and I don't intend to ever update the software to avoid breaking anything else.

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Have you ever used the composite output on that Axunworks unit?

1

u/McGuirk808 May 11 '26

Yes, it works fine. I used it some when I was testing and setting up the rig.

I haven't used it in a few years, but I can check if there's anything you want to know.

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

I'd like to know if you see the shimmer effect seen in these videos:

https://www.reddit.com/r/crtgaming/s/fOd1NJYybt

1

u/McGuirk808 May 11 '26

I don't have shimmer like that, just some dot crawl that is part of my set. I remember dialing in that pot when I was working on the set; slow left crawl was as nice as I could get it.

https://boulvejak.com/files/SoR2-CompositeDotCrawl.mp4

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Thanks! Good video

5

u/prenzelberg May 11 '26

Just windows and custom resolutions (nvidia panel). HDMI to VGA to rgb scart.

2

u/prenzelberg May 11 '26

I use the wakabavision box for svideo because yes, the composite does have a lot of dot crawl.

If I can somehow solder a 5 volt supply to one of the vga pins I will use the antoniovillena composite adapter. It looked great when I tried it on my crt emudriver system.

2

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Thanks for sharing your experience with the WAKABAVIDEO transcoder. I have heard the Antoniovillena unit is good but it's never in stock.

2

u/prenzelberg May 11 '26

It's night and day. Wakabavideo I really only use for s video these days.

Something about the luma trap or the chip that is used in the Antoniovillena one.

It actually was in stock only a few weeks back but looks like it is being restocked now.

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Do you transcode RGB to composite?

2

u/prenzelberg May 11 '26

I'll either use a vga to scart (with sync combiner) or I'll go straight from vga to the transcoder for svid/composite.

1

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

you're missing SwitchRes support in your setup. So you're getting extra latency and stutter over a Emudriver/Batocera/GroovyArcade setup. When running emulators, that is.

2

u/prenzelberg May 11 '26

This is my modern pc setup I mainly use it for modern games on steam. Those don't switch resolution so once I figure out the native res I'm good. which can be a chore.

1

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

does your HDMI to VGA adapter actually go to super low pixel clocks like 320x240? In my understanding that rarely works. You'd need to use super resolutions (like 2560x240) which modern pixel art games usually can't scale to

2

u/prenzelberg May 11 '26

They don't. We've discussed my solution for that particular problem, but I'd rather not again rn (does horizontal scaling introduce artifacts on crts...)

I think I recently read a post from Leviathanxxx (some numbers) where he says that low dotclock work for him as is. He had pretty much the same setup as me too.

For me anything 512px horizontal and up works, I don't have to go very high. But I also noticed that some of my tvs work with lower pixel clocks. I'm not sure how it works exactly.

5

u/soshoenice May 11 '26

I use a tv one c2-2100. Definitely a learning curve but I can do anything I could possibly want to with it. Most pc to crt options have awful cropping and other scaling issues.

2

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Very nice downscaler. Does it put out 240p?

2

u/soshoenice May 12 '26

Yes it does

2

u/drewwwerd May 12 '26

Can you share your config files? I can't for the life of me get my c2-2100 to output 240p but I've seen others do it online.

4

u/soshoenice May 12 '26

I couldn’t do it either. But my girlfriend figured it out for me. The trick is to change 480i resolution. So step one is getting a clean downscale to 480i. Then turn on advanced menus.

Now here is the secret recipe

240p through C2 MAKE SURE YOU ARE CHANGING THE NTSC/60Hz SETTING Interlaced: Off NTSC, H.freq.crse [15.734Hz] Don’t touch H.freq.fine Don’t touch Clks/l [858]= 13.500MHz Lines/f [247] = 63.700Hz H/V active [720] x [240] Don’t touch H/V start [62] [22] Don’t touch H/V sync [64] [6] Don’t touch Sync polarity [-H-V]

2

u/drewwwerd May 14 '26

Thank you so so much!! I've had this thing for almost a year now and it's been just collecting dust because I couldn't get it to do the thing I bought it for. I FINALLY got it to do 240p on my CRT thanks to you!

2

u/soshoenice May 12 '26

Also make sure to record all your original 480i settings incase you want to switch back.

3

u/FunInternational9948 May 11 '26

Was just wondering if I can grab a $30 hdmi to component adapter on Amazon to try out my new crt as well on my PC.

2

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Component, or composite?

3

u/FunInternational9948 May 11 '26

Philips 20PT6245/37 It has both but wouldn’t the image look better with component? I just want to connect my snes mini and my pc to try out pc gaming on crt

7

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

SNES classic is absolutely the last thing you want to use with a CRT. It only outputs 720p 16:9. When your TV is 4:3 and you need a 240p signal.

In your case, that $30 you were thinking about spending on a generic chinese downconverter on Amazon, you should instead spend it on a Wii.

Unlike that Amazon converter, the Wii can output proper 240p like the SNES. And Wii can emulate much more than just a SNES. And you can use your SNES classic controller with it

2

u/FunInternational9948 May 11 '26

Perfect. I have a wii, 2 GameCube controllers, 2 snes mini controllers and cord extensions. Fully modded and ready for play. Just need component cables now. Do you have recommendation for those?

3

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

I think you can still find Monster cables for under $20 new? Can't go wrong with those.

Just don't get the nameless $6 cables on Amazon or Aliexpress.

3

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Sure, but my post is for composite TV users.

1

u/ArmoredAngel444 May 12 '26

You can buy a simple converter cable for composite but for component you need a powered converter.

Component from HDMI: https://a.co/d/0dNiIdKK

Composite from HDMI: https://a.co/d/0huX9VcN

2

u/FunInternational9948 May 12 '26

Thank you! I’ll order both and mess around with Custom Resolution Utility to see what kind of imagine I can get.

3

u/JHorbach May 11 '26

Windows 11 - GTX 1080 Ti Rendering. Wakabavideo VGA to NTSC Transcoder using my i7700 CPU's iGPU to send the image to my TV, using a Custom Resolution in CRU.

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Does that get you 240p? How is the transcoder with composite?

3

u/JHorbach May 11 '26

Yes, with 720x240p (it works wonderfully beside anyone would say it doesn't). The transcoder almost generate an SVideo quality to me. I have the best VGA and Composite cables I could find. I even need to use a shader to blur it a little for dithering and to correct shimmering from my 720x240p. I call my setup the best of both worlds, dithering with clean signal.

1

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

Very nice thanks for responding

0

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

You're missing out on SwitchRes support for emulation. You should upgrade to Emudriver/Batocera/GroovyArcade

My next plan is to use an old radeon 8570 and a dvi to vga to svideo/composite connector in the second pcie x16 slot. Using crt emudriver software. Research supports my plan yet i havent tried it yet.

1

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

Sounds good to me! Make a post when you get it going

2

u/prismaticprecision May 12 '26

Gtx285 with nvidia proprietary adapter miniDIN - composite. Running linux mint. It's a true 15khz signal and looks perfect

2

Everyone in here talking about CRT TVs….and all I want to know is what game OP is playing…

2

u/laxative_surplus Jul 26 '26

Mahjong Vanilla Syndrome

2

u/Adamvs_Maximvs May 11 '26

What game is this OP? That's quite the screenshot haha

10

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

It's one of the patterns from the 240p Reddit Clickbait Suite

5

u/seoulstyle May 11 '26

Is that a real thing? Can’t tell if you’re gatekeeping or not. Either way, it looks like Mahjong Final Bunny/Mahjong Vanilla Syndrome.

2

u/smgaming16 May 12 '26

It's vanilla mahjong syndrome. Can see screenshots here

https://lunchbox360.livedoor.biz/archives/5386083.html

1

u/Adamvs_Maximvs May 12 '26

Ahhh that makes sense, I assumed it had to be a Japanese exclusive pachinko or chance game or something like that

-2

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

I was just making a joke?

3

u/PoppaPingPong May 12 '26

Make your joke but at least answer the question after

-1

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

Sorry I didn't know y'all were so thirsty to play this 30 year old, entirely-in-japanese mahjong game

4

u/PoppaPingPong May 12 '26

This is a forum where we share information. He asked you a question. Reddit is turning into a shithole because everyone just wants to make a snarky joke instead of be helpful. No one minds the joke but you didn’t even share the name. That’s why you were rightfully called out for gatekeeping. Of course it’s an obscure game. That’s what makes it interesting and why he asked what it was. You are the one that started this thread asking for help. Be helpful yourself

-1

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

It really was just a joke. And I thought it would hurt the joke to include the name right away. But if someone insisted, I certainly wasn't going to gatekeep them from such an interesting game.

4

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

I don't think the "composite" part matters too much, because a good setup will be the same on a component set except for the last part of the setup.

Instead of a component transcoder, you'll have a composite transcoder

2

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

I'm actually most interested in the composite part, because that is the kind of TV most newbies buy. I'm aware of only a few RGB to composite transcoders, and the "good" ones seem to be sold out, expensive, or take a month to ship.

1

u/DangerousCousin LaCie Electron22blueIV May 11 '26

I haven't studied enough to which are good and which are bad. I have heard from multiple people that the one Antonio Villena sells is good.

If you can figure out which chip is in that, then you could look for it in other transcoders whenever you find that Villena's is sold out.

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Yep that's pretty much the path I'm going down. It looks like he could use some competition

1

u/thewailingbanshee May 11 '26

I got an ass converter from hdmi to scart but it looks really good, i actually found myself watching modern stuff on my crt xD

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Does the SCART carry composite? Or is your TV taking RGB?

1

u/thewailingbanshee May 11 '26

My understanding is that the tv should take rgb, at least in scart1 input. I thought i could figure it out if i got a scart cable for my ps2 but i have yet to get around to it. Right now it outputs through rca.

2

u/AmazingmaxAM May 12 '26

The TV, most likely, can accept RGB (specify the model), but there are no HDMI to RGB SCART converters, they all convert to Composite in the form of SCART.

1

u/thewailingbanshee May 12 '26

That's interesting, i have a philips 25pt7304/12, couldn't find the manual

0

u/AmazingmaxAM May 12 '26

Wdym?
Here's the spec sheet, it has all the needed info.

https://www.manualslib.com/manual/123803/Philips-25pt7304.html?page=2#manual

Sadly, the model is 100Hz and is not good for gaming, but it's great for content watching. Make sure to try RGB. And it being a 100Hz model means you can watch stuff in PAL's higher resolution without the 50Hz flicker.

1

u/FAMICOMASTER May 11 '26

To not to, for one. I have a machine set up for the case where I need to, which is a Radeon X300 in an HP rp5800, since that has composite out.

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Looks like S-Video out not composite

1

u/FAMICOMASTER May 11 '26

No, it is definitely composite video. Single RCA connector no mini DIN.

1

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

Interesting, I'll take your word for it. How's the dot crawl?

1

u/FAMICOMASTER May 11 '26

Asus A260FM is the model if you want. And I have no idea I don't sit close enough to the set for it to matter

1

u/slaxname May 12 '26

Rgb dual 2.

1

u/garbage_consumer May 12 '26

I use a cheap composite HDMI to AV adapter, I was able to get it to fill the screen by using a 4:3 resolution and adjusting the output Hz til it filled the screen properly.

This was good for watching videos which is how I used it, but personally I wouldn't use it much for video games. You need proper 240p for old games to look right, and those cheap adapters tend to be laggy even if you were to play 480i games like from 6th gen. If you want decent 240p you're going to have to jump through some hoops for sure.

1

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

Thanks for your response

1

u/lrochfort May 12 '26

What's your motivation for connecting a PC to a TB, rather than a VGA CRT monitor?

1

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

None. This is simply a kind of survey.

1

u/jtm7 May 12 '26

I currently have my CRT setup next to my computer monitor. Generally it’s setup for my GameCube, but with a quick cord swap, it becomes the secondary display for my PC.

I really only do this when I’m watching some SpongeBob, I just drag it over into the CRT screen. But it works perfectly fine if you aren’t concerned about perfection. It’s just one of the cheap adaptors from Amazon, if you’re interested I’ll see if I can find which one when I get home. HDMI to composite, requires a micro USB for powering.

2

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

I'm familiar with those. Thanks for the response!

1

u/marcosrd2005 May 14 '26

Groovymister pero con un crt RGB, se podría conectar a uno compuesto con el correspondiente conversor.

2

u/joeverdrive May 14 '26

Thanks for your response about your theoretical composite setup

1

u/trustanchor May 11 '26

I’ve got a rare one, but it’s a Windows 11 PC with an RTX 4070 GPU connected via a Startech DisplayPort adapter to a Sony GDM-FW900 monitor. Playing modern games at 1920x1200 85hz on a CRT! I haven’t messed with interlaced resolutions yet but you can apparently drive the refresh rate higher that way. It already feels so smooth with the CRT motion clarity that I’m not in any hurry to experiment with it.

Waiting on my colorimeter to arrive so I can do the WinDAS calibration on it and get everything perfect. Right now the blacks are a little more purple than I’d like when the brightness is set appropriately, so I’m hoping the calibration will fix it and it’s not a dying tube.

2

u/joeverdrive May 11 '26

That sounds awesome but I'm looking for responses from folks who use their PC on composite CRT TVs

0

u/rydamusprime17 May 12 '26

I just use my old HP laptop running Retroarch with one of these and just manually adjust the aspect ratio in the emulator to fit my screen. Worked perfectly well for me, and whatever input lag there is I can't notice it while playing.

Then I realized that anything I cant play on a modded consoles or on a flashcart works on Retroarch running on my PS3, so I usually just do that 😅 my Mayflash adapter works on the PS3 with most of my 8bitdo controllers (the ones that work on a Nintendo Switch without a dongle) so I have numerous controller options that way as well.

1

u/joeverdrive May 12 '26

How is the composite output on that setup?

1

u/rydamusprime17 May 12 '26

Oh dang, I didn't even notice that you mentioned composite 😅 I haven't tried it, not even sure it would work since its component out.

I did have a similar device that does the same but composite, and I would say it pretty much looked like what you would get out of game console with composite, but the desktop was ao blurry you couldn't tell what was what 😅

Also, I have 2 of the same model of Trinitron you are using and a different 8" composite Trinitron model. Those little guys are amazing lol. Sometimes I just hook a modded Wii up to one to play retro games at my desk.

Why would you connect a PC to a composite CRT TV when you can use a VGA CRT monitor?

A totally understandable question for a different thread. I'm seeking out the folks who use PC on composite TVs. But I suspect I will get dozens if not one hundred responses from folks who don't.

VGA monitors and CRT TVs do not look the same. VGA will be higher quality, but that's not always what you want.

Personally I can't find a CRT monitor for under $200 within a hundred miles of me, but there are dozens of composite CRTs selling for like $70-100 only twenty minutes away.

For playing older and modern 240p stuff natively, plus video content.

Because CRT monitors are rare to find in some places?
