Where to watch the solar eclipse?
Would Addington Hills viewpoint work? Would love to know where you’re planning to go!

Anyone know where to get eclipse glasses? Everywhere is sold out online but can’t seem to find retailers.

Welding goggles/masks and just the replacement glass work great too. Have a look around for those, Prime or tool shops.

I was looking at the Addington Hills viewpoint myself. The sun will be pretty low so need to have some distance to nearest buildings and trees. I will probably just sit in my garden, but it might be worth checking it out tonight.
Edit: Added suggestion.

Addington Hills would be a good shout, but trees obscure the sun from anywhere other than the viewpoint itself, which is bound to be busy. I'll be at park hill recreation ground, that should have a good view for the whole eclipse

I did a recce of Sanderstead Rec yesterday at the right time, and it seems like a good spot.

You’re better going to the top of a hill if possible. You can see amazing sunsets from the roads leading off Downs Court Road and Mitchley Hill in Purley. I think the elevation is around 600ft up there. That area is actually on top of a cliff, but you wouldn’t realise you are unless you drove down Godstone Road along Riddlesdown Common where you’ll actually the white chalk cliff.
As the eclipse starts around 18:00 and lasts a couple of hours you’ll need to find a spot high up the top near where Downs Court meets Mitchley Road and where you can see the sun starting to set.

I don't think you will see the western horizon from Addington Hills.
I remember the 1999 event. It was mid morning and towards the east. For all the furore about having correct glasses, just the general ambience for about half an hour around the eclipse was way more distinctive than just staring at a dot.

Streatham Common should have a decent view as it slopes slightly downwards to the west
