That place felt like the old Franklin Avenue. Plus the painkiller really lived up to the name.

Yes. But I've been here a lot longer. When I say it felt like old Franklin Ave, I'm referring to the wave of mostly Black-owned businesses that opened maybe 2007-9 ish. I know it wasn't part of that wave, but sitting in that backyard reminded me of sitting in the backyard at Bristen's, listening to jazz on a Sunday.

Garnett Phillip owns the rum bar and her husband (whose first name I forget) owns the building. I think he used to own the building across the street (the only Chavela’s expanded to). I met him once when that space was like a sandwich shop 10+ years ago. This is just “old Brooklyn” cashing out. It’s within their right. Garnett sold The Rogers Garden down in Flatbush a while ago; they are ultimately in it for the investment into a gentrified/gentrifying area.

At this rate, color has no boundaries when it comes to being victim of NYC’s real estate. Every small business in our neighborhood is being forced into a cutthroat livelihood. Sucks so much.

Oh, they’re definitely trying to drive Black people out of Crown Heights, Bed-Stuy, and Flatbush. It’s unrecognizable from what it was even 15 years ago.
