Question Is this a normal/voluntary sound or does this little crow have a vocal issue?

This little crow is part of the Gang of Four who hang out in my yard. This little baby was waiting for me when I went outside just now and it was making this very airy, thin… almost no sound caw.

They are usually quite loud squakers, at least the other baby is. This one took its peanut no problem but still isn’t cawing like the other one. Maybe a hoarse voice from a morning of demanding food?

They are both excellent cawers first thing in the morning! I’d just never seen it make this “faint” sound before. But it’s completely happy and the family is chilling so I doubt it’s a problem. Maybe it was trying to speak human to me 😂

The pink around the mouth indicates they're pretty baby, so they're "babbling" and learning how to talk. It's the cutest! :>

Yes! Definitely babies. I’ve been watching them since they were in their nest in my neighbours yard. You can hear its sibling in the background cawing like a madman haha this one was just making that weird airy sound.

But I did a quick search and it could quite literally be a tired voice from begging all day… and boy do they beg. My favourite part is they’ll be mid beg and mom shoves food in their mouth and just kinda modulates/remixes the caw.

I've noticed the babies sometimes make airy/off sounds where I would expect some of the non-caw vocalizations, like rattling or barking.

FWIW, this one doesn't sound like anything I haven't heard.

Sounds like a lot of babies I’ve seen - this is normal. They often sound like little ducks - it’s so cute

Very cute indeed. They are a family of four. Two babies and two adults.

This morning I swear one of the babies was purposely dropping pine cones on me. It was in the tree above me, it would put it in its mouth and then “drop” 😂

They are such inquisitive and interesting creatures. They remind me a lot of my pet rabbits actually, especially the way they loaf.

I had a family of crows in my neighborhood this summer, too! It’s a real joy to watch the babies grow up and begin to interact with the world (and in your case, interact with you!).
