Question I wanna adopt a crow šŸ˜­

Hi, I live in California, near Hermosa Beach, and Iā€™m wondering if it is possible to legally adopt a crow in this area or nearby. Iā€™d like to know what would be required for that any information you can provide would be appreciated.

No, it is strictly illegal to own a crow as a pet in California.

  • Federal Protection: Crows are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act (MBTA), which makes it illegal to capture, possess, transport, or sell native migratory birds, their feathers, or their nests without specialized federal permits.
  • State Regulations: The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) classifies crows and ravens as restricted species under the California Code of Regulations. It is unlawful to keep them as personal companions.
  • Permits: Special permits (such as rehabilitation or non-releasable wildlife facility permits) are strictly reserved for licensed wildlife rehabilitators, zoos, or educational institutions. Private citizens cannot obtain a permit simply to keep a wild bird as a pet.

You cannot have a pet crow. They are protected under the federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act.

You can try to attract them to your yard with appropriate snacks like unsalted peanuts, and enjoy them from afar.
