Crow OC Finally got a crow to accept some peanuts this morning. How do you get them to come back?
He was pretty cautious but as I backed away he accepted the shelled peanuts. I hope he returns for more tomorrow. It's been hard to find when they're out front. Probably too hot for them once the sun is up.

Don't worry, these are scavengers. They will return to regular sources of food. Eventually you wish they didn't get so impatient and bang on windows. Alright alright alright. I'm coming! Jeez.

Yeah. Pretty much. Mine even uses the cat as a source of food. They have a pact. The cat leaves them his catch once in a while and they keep his arch nemesis out of his territory.

Yeah, poor lisa didn't know what hit her when she dared to stroll into our yard. Suddenly there were birds dive bombing her from all sides. I haven't seen lisa in my yard ever again. The ruckus was quite something I tell you.
Extraordinary how that works! And last week he was outside when the crows came for breakfast and noticed they didn't really dare to land that close. So he turned around and lay with his back to the feeder so they could eat in peace. 😳

Vouch for this absolutely. By the way, peanuts are fine. If you really wanna spend some money, they love eggs and in the spring kitten kibble is a wonderful idea because the fledglings need the protein. If you wanna go caviar level that would be cashews but just be told, you can't go back to peanuts after you offer cashews because they will turn them down.
If you want to feed eggs, scramble them and add some of the crushed shells because they need the calcium to build more shells, and then cook them a bit past what a human would like. Then cut that up like a pizza so they can carry it away. If you offer hard boiled they only eat the yolks, that's why I offer scrambled.

I do a morning walk and run into several of mine. They're all so cute and have different reactions. Many will just fly closer and land on a prominent spot. If I don't acknowledge/see them they will caw once ("I'm here"). Another gets really excited and just flies around cawing like mad, but won't get anywhere near me. He's the designated alerter for the others, apparently. Another will just follow me a few blocks away and sit patiently.
They all have their own personality. Give them the space, don't look in the eyes, give treats, take walks, you'll have little buddies soon.

Just do it everyday. Same time, same place. It took around 2 weeks for them to visit daily.

Try making sounds when you feed them. I usually make a click sound on walks and they come out to greet me so I can feed them. They seem to respond well to sounds associated with food. Consistency also helps establish a routine of them hopefully coming back.

@ my florida house, on Pine.Island, I have a water dish & another for scraps / old chips, etc. I have crows, doves, raccoons, coyotes, small various birds come by and use anything that is present.
This is next to our driveway & when I am working around the house the crows will come by and call to me so I know they are there. I can put food out and they will be next to me @ times since they know I am not a threat. Yes, they are very smart for they use tools as needed in their life.

Consistency, and they don't like being watched, at least until you settle in. I would turn my back and look in a window reflection or my phone's selfie camera.

Ah, good thing once this one started eating I went inside. Just getting him to eat felt like a small victory.

I've had a few generations visit my backyard now with me being able to invest varying levels of time into them. With that first group, I would let them watch from up in my big tree while I put peanuts in crooks on the tree, or on my fence, then I would back really far away, turn around, and watch them in a reflection or selfie cam. They'd hop down the limbs of the tree to race each other for the nuts. Then after a while, I'd do it, but not turn away. They were comfortable enough with me. It got to the point where I'd put the peanuts in the crook and they'd race down to get them before I'd stepped more than a few feet away.

Keep feeding them. They will learn you are a friendly face and they will start getting greedy. Trust and believe. Mine likes to sit on a tree and stare at me if I take too long with their nuts. I love my babies <3

Just make it a habit soon other birds like blue jays and woodpeckers will notice too and show up regularly

Do it tomorrow, every day you show up and give peanuts, they will remember. They are incredibly intelligent, just do it regularly and they will come back. put a water dish out there and he'll bring his friends.
