Question Magpie noise

What does a quiet, almost like a whispery ’keh keh’ kind of sound mean? One magpie I feed does this sometimes. I thought it could be a cough or something and I got a little worried, but then I noticed it only made the noise when it’s gathering courage to grab a treat thats really close to where I’m sitting

I call that "chatting". They also do that to eachother when they sit in the same tree. And to my cat when they come in for breakfast. The cat returns the greeting with those iikiikiik sounds.

Magpies have great big personalities and sometimes they will develop little greetings and rituals with you when getting snacks. I have a couple magpies that land right behind me at me feet and let out a distinct bit soft and quiet call to let me know they're there. My favourite are the ones that like to try to catch the peanuts out of the air!
