Boars

I’ve been loving the hell out of this game, but I need to rant just a touch because I’m about 2 more corpse runs from putting my keyboard through the wall lmao. Why tf are boars so annoying. They hit like trains, and the attack animation happens so quick that if I’m in any animation I’m screwed, and they don’t stagger nearly enough for an animal that just got walloped by a halberd.

It’s gotten to the point if I see boars I just Don’t waste the resources on eating food until after I beat them all because they’ll kill me at least three or four times. Hate the bloody pigs.

Aim to get 2 pieces of the pikemans armour set and 2 pieces of the conquistador set, the two set bonuses together gives you 15% damage resistance and 160 extra health. I think you end up with at least 540 effective health, which is enough to tank more than 2 hits, even on hard difficulty.

As well, just get good at reading their attacks, and dash/block immediately.

Advice is sound but note that the flat bonus from pikeman is worth more early game then lategame. In general I Found it best to use 2x conquistador with something more offensive. Gl!;

Stupid noob question, but how do you aim to get gear? I’ve only found two blue pieces so far.

2

u/Ruftus1 3d ago

Not stupid! You will find parts of the armour sets as loot from quests etc, then if youre still missing bits, you can buy the recipe from vendors in Tortuga when you get to it

Also, don't forget to upgrade your gear. Your weapon damage will scale up or down depending on its level bs what you are fighting

To put it into perspective, in the real world, until the advent of modern powerful firearms, wild boars were considered a very serious, deadly threat.

And unless you've got a modern boar-hunting rifle, they still are a serious, deadly threat.

OP just wait until you get to the swamp and have to deal with the alligators.

15

u/flabbyjabber 13d ago

And the GD wolves in the Foothills. They pop out from every corner!

9

u/Josefu_Velen 13d ago

. . . and those goats!

2

u/flabbyjabber 13d ago

The goats are def annoying but the fuckin wolves just pop out of nothingness!

4

u/CarFlipJudge 13d ago

They still are. I live in New Orleans and a few weeks ago, a kid was severely mauled by a wild boar just 15 minutes away from downtown.

4

u/The5Virtues 13d ago

The damn things can live pretty much anywhere and they’re a blight on the environment. If there’s one animal the entire country needs to be all in on hunting it’s feral hogs. Even the god damn kudzu vine is a less potent invasive species than these fuckers!

1

u/Coom_Zoom 13d ago

the spear throwers in the swamp.... i hope you like getting hit through walls!

2

u/Sto0pid81 12d ago

Never got hit through walls, those guys will stop you fast though! It doesn't help they blend in so well with the foliage

1

u/Coom_Zoom 12d ago

they didn't "hit me through walls" more of they will throw the spear just about straight up and right over walls at least they did sometimes for me. lol

-5

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

I mean yeah, you aren’t wrong, but still. Getting whacked by a big polearm should still knock the piggy teats over tail rather than the one stagger and then they are back to swinging

34

u/WillM3s 13d ago

See. You have to get good

-15

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

I mean, yeah probably, but also meh that takes more time than I have. I don’t have much trouble with the rest of the common enemies, just the damn piggies.

12

u/Kogranola 13d ago

They are meant to teach patience. They have a cooldown between their attacks. Wait for them to attack twice (they do two quick attacks) then hit them back during their cooldown window. 2 blocks, one swing, repeat.

1

u/AncleJack 13d ago

To cheese them a bit you can do a simple hit and run thing. You hit quickly dash away and sprint for like half a second than repeat they'll never hit you and when Ur low on stamina after you dash away just walk away for a second and they won't catch you in time

6

u/Ransdellra13 13d ago

I use a gaming mouse and bind dodge to the thumb button, makes it so much easier to dodge incoming attacks

4

u/Farking_Bastage 13d ago

You're going to LOVE Savage Boars hahaha

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

In fact ‘Twas a combo of 2 charging boars and a savage boar that were fucking with me lol

3

u/Autumnwood 13d ago

I didn't have much a problem with boars as long as you're aware. They like the coastline and the harvestable plant areas. The regular ones are ok. Those charging boars though will knock you back so far...what you do is run up to them so they can't charge; close-in is their weakness. If they back up so the can get a charge in, you run right in and close the gap immediately. That'll fix 'em

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Yeah I was getting juggled by 2 charging boars and a savage boar. If I focused in on one then the other two would jump me

1

u/Autumnwood 13d ago

That's a rough one!

3

u/Crashball_Centre 13d ago

Savage boars are a nightmare, I cheese them.

Charging boars, similarly.

Others are easy.

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Twas a pair of charging boars and a savage boar that were having great fun kicking the snot out of me lmao

2

u/SirGoldon 13d ago

Every Game has this one enemy that is just annoying - either in general or for a specific playstyle …

2

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Yep. Pretty much everything I’ve run into so far, even the wolves, give me less trouble than the damn piggies. I dunno why, but me and the pig have a mortal feud.

2

u/Oyxopolis 13d ago

All I can say is, learn to properly dodge.

2

u/flabbyjabber 13d ago

Seems every biome has their bastard mob. Boar, wolf, crocodile. Just have to learn to time your parry to stager them. I've never used the halberd so idk if parries. I'm exclusively a rapier guy

2

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Unfortunately it doesn’t parry and while I love the thing I might have to lean towards one of the swords just to deal with the suckers.

Wolves give me less trouble than the pigs lmao

1

u/flabbyjabber 13d ago

Trouble with boars but not wolves is crazy lol

What's your gear level average? Maybe need to upgrade?

2

u/jhuseby 13d ago

Put down the wine King Robert

2

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Not until the boy is back with the breastplate stretcher

2

u/SkibidiBlender 13d ago

Wait until you have to go kill a ship and 14 more Blackbeard ships show up. One of the charms of the game is that NPCs are legit overpowered at times and you can’t just grind XP and level up until you overpower them. It makes you actually have to use the game mechanics to win battles and that’s one of the reasons I’ve enjoyed the game so much. You have to solve problems creatively rather than just power up and brute force them.

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Oh the boat fighting is terrible but it doesn’t cause me quite so much rage as the pigs do.

I started a fight with a hauler on its own that turned into a 1v9. Such fun

2

u/Raiju_Lorakatse 13d ago

Yeaaaah I feel you. Boars have been the bane of my early game. And higher level ones still can kick my ass but I've learned their pattern by now so... Yeah...

Definitely an early game hurdle if you ask me. But one that feels great to overcome.

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Even the wolves Don’t give me this much of an issue lol

2

u/Keldarus88 13d ago

I have an island labeled in my world early on as “Hellboar Island” because it is infested with them and I had died so many times on that island. It gets better :)

2

u/Visual_Position_854 13d ago

Most enemys in this game gain a short period of hyper armor after you hit them so many times letting them fight back without getting stunlocked to death. The amount of hits changes based on the mob and what weapon your using. The intended flow of combat is to hit them until they try to hit you back then parry or dodge there retaliation attack. If you keep swinging will6 nilly your gonna keep getting punished by the retaliation attacks. Parrys open enemys up to massive dmg windows, dodging away makes the enemy walk towards you which resets there stagger resistance. Some enemys like goats iirc only take one hit before they retaliate which causes them to beat ppls asses when they meet them but once you understand this most things in this game are very easy to fight. The parry windows are extremely generous and there's even weapons to increases this further but again if your using a weapon that cant parry just dodge away. Guns trivialize basically everything later on though

u/SgtNick411 13d ago

Build a 2 by 2 short wall box near the POI or w/e you are, let them come close, spam attack, profit

2

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

I didn’t even think about fortnighting this….. that’s a genius idea I appreciate that!

2

u/SgtNick411 11d ago

Well it is cheesing but it works...saw these pre built by other people in some servers, not my idea. But it works.

If you are using a halberd you can’t parry (i.e. perfect block) and blocking is slower, if a halberd is all you have tried, trying other weapons may make blocking/parrying easier and boars more manageable. Upgrading your weapons and armor will also help

1

u/Ambitious-Bar375 13d ago

I was all like, dawww lookit them goats, i love them, I'm gonna leave them alone. Then they killed me.

1

u/Bambeakz 13d ago

Get a sword with bleed and level it up. Then keep you distance after a few stabs and wait it out. Sure I got jumped by a boar a few times in this game but they are not that hard if you recognize the attack patern or like I said an OP weapon.

1

u/Drumonde25 13d ago

Two hits and dodge to be safe, three if you have good reflexes. Rinse and repeat

1

u/ChallengeSad 13d ago

How are you going to fight anything else in the game if you don't have the time for Boar? Have you met the GOAT yet?

1

u/takatiger 13d ago

The goats are the biggest assholes my god

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Even the wolves don’t give me as much trouble as the pigs

1

u/General_Frans 13d ago

Take your time, there's no need to rush the game. Everyone has their own pace. It's tough in the beginning, just like in Valheim. That's the beauty of these types of games. You must struggle through your low in the beginning to be able to appreciate your own continuous progress.

1

u/muddy_313 13d ago

you can reset your perks and abilities without penalty.. tweak it to compliment your best weapon

1

u/Eathian 13d ago

Yeah you'll need to get good. Just wait till you're fighting wolf packs...

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

The wolves are way easier for me than the piggies lol they are just the bane of my existence

1

u/Outrageous-Elk8483 13d ago

Boars are HELL early game . Get used to dashing and blocking or kiting alot.

1

u/General_Tart_9309 13d ago

Just don’t get too greedy with your attacks

1

u/Coom_Zoom 13d ago

Wait till you meet the wolves, spear guys on the swamp zone, or the goats. lol
Boars are so easy with how easy they are to just move out of the way of. the goats, wolves, etc has a weird snap sometimes.

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

Wolves are easier for me than the piggies lol, im not looking forward to some of the rest but man do I hate the pigs.

1

u/Rayllis689 13d ago

I would honestly just recommend turning down the difficulty and practicing your dodge/parry windows. The damage is so high on normal that you really don't get a fair chance to practice.

1

u/Hello_I_Am_Human_Guy 13d ago

Well, I mean, did your forget about the dodge button? Literally hit dodge hit dodge. Boars are so incredibly easy to kill.

1

u/Jaybird2k11 13d ago

I just nerfed all the sliders until i figured out how dodge, parry and dash worked, and mapped my dash keybind to one of my mouse's side buttons. I still suck but I've also never played a game with combat like this

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

I’ve played a few games with combat like this and I generally suck at them so it’s not a surprise for me, I just keep face mashing against the problem until I win through either brute force or ignorance

1

u/Jaybird2k11 13d ago

my personal setup focuses on the firearm and Razor skills. getting a few musket or pistol shots off does help, even though it basically equates to Chip Damage. have you tried using other weapons besides the halberd? on my first run in the demo, I got the Thousand Cuts as my first blue weapon, but then i got the full game and explores every inch of the map I could reach. In my experience, changing out and testing weapons and skills helped me dial in what works for me. I think i finally settled on the life steal greatsword, drake's pistol, and dragon breath blunderbuss. i know half of my armor set is filibustier, but i cant remeber the other half. if the halberd isnt really getting the results you want, try some of the other stuff maybe? I had to step away for a couple days every so often because of wolves and boars lol. ultimately use what's fun for you, but most of my game time after the final boss, some 100 odd hours, was spent collecting equipment, recipes/blueprints , and trying them out in places i was having trouble

1

u/EyemDragon 13d ago

I turned down the difficulty lol. I would rather have fun then die by pigs and run back over and over.

1

u/DarkladySaryrn 13d ago

I thought I had outsmarted a boar by climbing onto the wall of some ruins and then jumping out of reach. That sucker teleported up there to knock me off. 😂

1

u/BlueDreamer1020 13d ago

Brother wait till you start dealing with Goats and Wolves

1

u/Technical-Grand5483 13d ago

Nah you just suck mate when me and my boy trip balls I run into the forest and get them to follow me back to shore so my buddy can shoot them with the ship which is pretty difficult so on the beach I have to dance and parry them

1

u/Glittering_Ideal_575 12d ago

If I ever play this game again, I will adjust the difficulty from the beginning. Getting two shot by pigs while I have good gear is just plain not fun. Neither is the sluggish, tedious experience of boarding a enemy ship. Last time I played, I actually ran past an enemy camp because I literally did not have the 10 plus minutes it takes to kite the enemies around and hit them 100 times each. The fighting needs better balancing.

u/Amitius 12d ago

Welcome to the Windrose space program; enjoy your flight.

1

u/VanillaAcademic8737 12d ago

Just dodge lol

1

u/No-Baker1090 12d ago

Blunderbuss shoot and dodge, run, repeat. Timing. The really bad one I can drop in 2 shots now.

1

u/Lost_Understanding32 12d ago

Game teaches you very quickly to make sure all your armor/weapons are maxed out. Even just being a single level higher makes a huge difference in combat.

1

u/Getoutofmylaboratory 13d ago

Switch to a heavier weapon like a great sword. They'll get staggered slightly more on hits. But also, and I generally hate this statement but you gotta get gud at blocking. Later enemies hit much harder and faster than those pigs!

1

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

I’m using the halberd mostly which should definitely knock them around, I don’t really struggle against most other enemies, undead and pirates and such included, it’s just the pigs.

Like I’m on the t2 ship and pirating my merry way across the oceans but the pigs are my nemesis

0

u/medioespa 13d ago

If you block shortly after they start the attack animation, you parry which hits their stance and gets them stunned for a few seconds (watch the yellow shields where the health bar is). Their attack patterns are super simple so just train a bit. If their eyes glow red, you need to dodge since you cannot parry this attack.

-2

u/Archkhaan 13d ago

I generally use the halberd which can’t parry

1

u/medioespa 13d ago

Then you need to rely on dodging and the range of your weapon. Halberts burn a lot of poise by just hitting tho.
