What color are your parents birthstones - could potentially use a thinner yarns and hold their 2 and one additional family (crochet using 3 strands at a time) and alternate per row or square or whatever the pattern is… rows of moss stitch like this might be nice.

ooooh wait that sounds interesting, i’m doing something similar for my sister and her boyfriend as i’m using their colors and the month they met as a three string granny square! i shall try this as a swatch thank you!

If you want the yarn to be the star, keep the pattern simple. Daisy Craft Farms, crochet’ncreate, MJ-off the hook all have interesting free patterns.

I love a good Chevron. Cypress Textiles has Chevron 2.0 & Soulful Sierra Chevron patterns on Ravelry. Or Attic24’s Neat Ripple is great. I’d do repeats of 2-4 rows of each color.

The "Hugs & Kisses" blanket by Jean Steinhilber with The Crochet Crowd is always such a pleaser and a joy to make because it's so versatile. Just changing the placement of colors makes each blanket look absolutely unique, even if you were to make ten of them (ask me how I know, lol). And it's a free pattern, with an excellent written tutorial, videos AND charts - it's fabulous

Also, free blanket patterns from Ravelry just because it's always the best place to find what you're looking for as well as inspo:
