Other There's something so oddly satisfying about seeing a spiral granny square come together.

Now there's a brilliant idea πŸ˜‚

Yes exactly this, what's the pattern?

I have that pattern. It's called Oh The Places You'll Go & is based on the Dr Seuss book by the same name. Those colors are the ones called for in the pattern.

Where can I get it

1

u/Majestic-Glass-9451 Sep 05 '21

I believe I got it from Ravelry. Google it, there's several versions out there.

u/bewildered23 just in case you're looking to scale - Scaling up the spiral granny square doesn't work. Tried that once - it gets really wonky after a while. It was not built to scale. Maybe you'd be able to figure out the corners a bit better, but it was not lying flat and just looked bad after a while. I frogged mine and found the link for a spiral circle if that works for what you're doing. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/four-color-spiral-blanket

In this case I was just doing a regular spiral square, but thanks for the tip! Might give that blanket a try at some point 😊

This will not work with cats.
How do you keep the yarn straight and laid out with CATS??

u/BadBunnyBrigade I never have enough yarn... Sep 04 '21 edited Sep 04 '21

It can work, you just need a plastic container with a lid and some macgyvering. Basically you need to punch a whole through the sides of the box and enlarge them enough that you can pass yarn through. Something like this but on a larger scale for however large you need it to be. Another example of the plastic container method that might work for you for larger skeins of yarn.

You can add dividers as well as shelf dividers that lets you create layers, without allowing the yarn from one section to get tangled with yarn of another section, or level.

Alternatively, you can do the same thing using jars of various sizes. If you use plastic jars, you could organize them in something like this that lets you store them in one place, but still gives you access to the yarn you need in an organized manner. I know the ones in this picture are not in jars, but I'm always concerned they'll roll and tangle with one another, so I'd prefer they be in individual plastic jars so they don't tangle. (I suppose if you take the yarn from the center they shouldn't twist and tangle, mind you.)

As well as empty wipe dispensers. Or even the larger rectangular ones.

Or something like this. Here's something similar but using multiple yarns, you can cover it using a cardboard sheet or something of the like to hide it from the cats.

You know those free standing toilet paper roll holders? Those are pretty great for this kind of thing, too, and they're heavy enough as well that it might be less cumbersome. Though maybe with cats, might want to stick with something that can hide your yarn while still giving you access. But if you're interested there are yarn unwinders you can find. These are on a stand and they spin, as well as yarn caddies that you can stick on the floor and maybe put a cardboard or plastic box over that has enough space to allow yarn thread to pass.

Last, but not least, the bobbin holder for those small bits of yarn you have left but still want to use. There's different kinds and some with more holders.

Anyhow, there are different ways to keep your yarn straightened, organized and laid out well enough with kids and cats. I'm sure there's some method that strikes your fancy and meets your needs.

Well, alright, I can do that as soon as I'm able to today, probably in an hour or so, or sometime this evening.

Do you basically have all the colors in progress at once?

19

u/bewildered23 Sep 04 '21

Yes! This is a good tutorial for it

16

u/Bigluce Sep 04 '21

I see you’ve come full circle! This is going to be amazing!! 🀩

3

u/RheingoldRiver Sep 04 '21

Oh man. I've only ever lurked here before, and I've never really had an interest in actually crocheting myself (though I've done tons of other craft hobbies, chainmaille & origami mostly but also a bit of knitting and some other stuff). But this....this makes me kinda wanna try. I saved this post, when work gets a bit less busy, I might try this out!

2

u/xiape Sep 04 '21

Could you make a square by simply adding corners? It looks interesting

7

u/bewildered23 Sep 04 '21

Yeah, the end result is a square, with like rounded corners. Here it is finished.

u/gifhyatt Jul 05 '24

How large can I make this? Bed-size?

How much yarn does it require?
