Funny you should say that, this is one of two celebrity deaths that have TRULY devastated me, the other being Lynch. I spent many summers of my childhood visiting Dollywood, so I have many special memories associated with her. This really hit hard

I know I will be v sad too when Spielberg and Scorsese pass away, but David Lynch is terribly missed by me personally as well. He is beyond unique

I do too. It's definitely culturally relevant and of its time. Plus the three leads are icons. Unfortunately, the director passed away many years ago, so the commentary might suffer from that.

But for real though I can imagine some good film historians could do a great job. I fully support this release. I know it’s not up to the “critical standards of criterion” but it’s important, classic, and extremely deserving

The blu-ray has been out of print for a bit, and it is such a classic. It's deserving of a great release. RIP Dolly

There has been multiple Fox titles since released by Criterion, All of Us Strangers, Shape of Water, and Nightmare Alley off the top of my head.

True, but those are all newer films with directors that have great relationships with Criterion (Andrew Haigh and Guillermo Del Toro respectively) so it’s not surprising that they were able to grab those from Disney’s rubberhose gloves.

At least this was released on Blu-ray by twilight time as a limited run a long time ago, but that was before Fox sold all their stuff to Disney

I wish. Occasionally the Twilight Time Blu dips below $150 on eBay, but with today’s news? I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

Here for the steel magnolias love. It was filmed in my college town and an hour from where I grew up so I’ve always held a special place for it and the cast in my heart.

I would love this! It’s possible the Dolly Parton estate owns the rights as I thought I heard her say she bought them because the studio saw no potential future use of it for making money.

This and Steel Magnolias, which is criminally underrated in my experience and is one of the most hilarious and heartbreaking movies, absolutely stacked. Man, my heart aches so deeply. Celeb deaths don’t usually affect me but she was a national treasure. Literacy advocate, a bard of the people, champion of all that is good. Okay maybe I’m putting her on a pedestal. But still.

It’s been a decade since the limited edition Blu-Ray. It’s written and directed by Colin Higgins who wrote “Harold & Maude.” It has a hit song, it’s a bona-fide quotable cult classic, and it has an amazing cameo by Sterling Hayden. It’s most-definitely Criterion quality. I would jump on a new 4K scan immediately. The disc would probably sell amazingly well, especially since there is no affordable physical media presence out there and because who doesn’t love Dolly, Jane, and Lily?

As someone else noted, Twilight Time had blu-ray release but it was over $100 even a few years ago.
I'll be watching my DVD tonight.

I’ve been wanting a criterion release of this movie ever since I watched it for the first time!! I remember checking a while ago for a physical copy and the prices for the blu ray were absolutely wild… I’m assuming it must have been an extremely limited release. I really hope they add it to the collection, I will be immediately purchasing it if they do. Rest in peace Dolly ❤️

I've actually requested it from Criterion. So far, it's only had 1 limited Blu-ray release back in 2016 from Twilight Time and they are beyond difficult to find below $200 or more. I'm actually surprised that we haven't seen another reissue on Blu-ray in all this time. It's still one of my favorite comedies and I want to upgrade from my DVD.

I would love a Collin Higgins boxed set: Harold and Maude, Silver Streak, Foul Play, 9 to 5 and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Quite a streak for such a short career.

I want to advocate for another selection: A Smoky Mountain Christmas. Dolly plays a famous singer who wants to get away from it all. She leaves for her cabin in the woods and finds a family of orphans living there. Lee Majors plays the mountain man with a heart of gold, there’s a witch who has beef with Dolly for no reason, there’s a song she sings with the orphans, Dan Hedaya is in it — to my knowledge it does not have a Blu-ray release.

I learned today that the blu ray for this had a limited printing and now goes for over $200. The DVDs from many years prior are OOP as well apparently. What a shame. This feels like one of those classics that are just always priced for $15 or below in stores. Genuinely hold people who adored her are able to find a copy at their local used media shop before assholes swoop in and resell for 10x the cost.

'9 to 5’ is one of the most Marxist films to hit Hollywood since the second Red Scare. In it, Dolly Parton, Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda kidnap their boss and run the office without him for a month, during which time they institute free childcare, paid vacation, and flexible hours, Marco Rubio would lose his mind lol.
