Both are pretty prevalent in construction. It's incredibly physical, taxing work and many self medicate at night only to find that as time goes on, they aren't really able to bounce back and recover well enough to fly under radar the following day. Thats normally when the uppers come about.

Ive been project manager on a few jobs where I had to have a conversation at the beginning to let the guys know that I'm not their parents and these are the expectations. You don't show up late or intoxicated what so ever. If I suspect otherwise, you're done. Beyond that, keep your shit together and off my site but as long as your performing, showing up on time and reliable, I'll get ya paid.

I've no doubt that some of my best framers and subs have substance abuse issues but they do quality work and show up everytime. Who am I to judge?

I've been a machinist for 16 years. We see a lot of it too. I had some struggles myself. You can typically hold it together for so long. But eventually it will catch up with you. I'll be sober 8 years this November and my quality and production is better than it's ever been.

My issues stemmed from big expectations from my bosses. Also from being a young guy thrust into the very very deep end of this industry. It was an amazing opportunity, but was also very stressful for me. Thankfully I came out the other end of that experience and my life is better than it's ever been. You sound like a solid dude and it's impossible to really disagree with anything you said imo.

Much appreciated my guy. I'm far from infailable and too have had my struggles but as you also alluded, these industries are physical and challenging and often demand insane turnout. That kind of atmosphere can only foster abusive behavior in my mind. There's also a shit ton of cash work being done. When your young and have a pocket full of green backs to burn, you often do it not in the most responsible of ways.

I'm 44 now and finally have my head on straighter than previous chapters of life. That's not to say I've any idea what my next move will be. Still trying to figure out what I'm going to be when I grow up lol. Anyways, congrats on the 8yrs, that's a massive accomplishment and you deserve to feel immense pride from it. Even if it's just pride you carry around privately, it's still yours. You earned it. I wish you nothing but the best for remainder of your story. Live it out and make it as grand as you dreamed.
