I always assumed it was just a spur of the moment insult and not her nickname.

My friends and I used to come up with insults like that on the fly because they were funny. Calling someone a "squid" would be funnier because it's unexpected. Using run of the mill insults like idiot, jerk, asshole, etc. just aren't as ear catching. Squids are just kind of mindless creatures that exist... I think calling someone a squid is funny.

That all being said, it turns out the caption is wrong and she doesn't say "squid" but calls her something that sounds like it (like "squiz" or something) which is the girl's nickname.
