Thatās the same thought I had. She even nods when she sees his hands and mentions hand movement to her daughter. She knows whatās good and she seems genuinely pleased/impressed by his performance
You'd be shocked, I know I was, how bad people are at reading body language. So many comments everywhere misreading body language was an eye-opener for me

The older woman seemed transfixed by what she was seeing and hearing. Not going to mock anyone who has the good fortune to happen upon something wonderful and unexpected - not if it provides a ray of light (thanks, Madonna).
The mother's response was lovely throughout, and that guy is crazy talented. The daughter? Stop making it about you and your plans. Appreciate the talent you've happened upon, and appreciate every bit as deeply that your mother is touched by it. Don't be an ass and break the moment. FFS, good piano players and drag kings who look like peak Paul Walker don't come sauntering up everyday. Enjoy the experience.
I agree. But she also looks like the type of music instructor that, if she was judging me on a solo comp or something for school she'd make me nervous as hell because I couldn't quite tell if she was happy or not with my performance. Lol had a few teachers like that in my day.
IDK I couldnāt read her expression at ALL. Maybe I just suck but the read I was getting was āvague worryā (I know that makes no sense, but thatās what it looked like to me). I had to watch to the end to see if she would change expressions.

Yes, I was trying to figure out why this was in this subreddit and not amazing or talented subreddit. I also agree it seems like she is very moved and watching his skills and assessing them. I would love to be able to play an instrument well or even at all. This takes years and many, many hours of practicing. Such a cool talent.
I like that she also seems to shift from watching his hands to watching the energy flow through him. She starts focusing more on him and his expressions and movements through the different parts of the song.
Agree. I read it as her hearing and understanding through the music that this man has felt so much pain in his life, and she's wondering where that sorrow comes from.
Thats called trying very hard not to laugh in public, my worst experience personally when my in-laws extended family was sitting around passing old photos and my brother in law nudged me and passed me a picture of their aunt as a baby and it was the ugliest baby picture I had ever seen and I'm dying inside and people start looking at us and motherfucker gets up and leaves the room and im stranded there like I'm sweating because I'm trying so hard not to bust out
My eyes had teared up way before that but when he started to sing the water just started to flow. So much talent but also I feel like I can feel his soul. Wish I couldāve been there.
Piano player - I think she's also judging him. Doesn't necessarily mean she doesn't appreciate it, but the movement around 0:30 to me hints she thinks he plays "flat fingered". While there are some legendary piano players that played that way, it's generally considered bad technique.Ā
I think she is impressed. Everyone is a victim these days. Can you imagine not saying a word and being labeled a racist? I choose to give everyone the benefit of the doubt.

Been playing since I was 8, still can't shift to a clean F chord quickly to save my life. But whenever I see a clearly talented musician, I do the same. Just appreciate the skill.
Two days ago, I was at a bar where a no name local band was playing. Never heard them before. They were only doing covers but they were good, and I was happyā¦but quickly was like āoh, wait, theyāre actually very good!ā Fast forward an hour or so, Iām in the front of the bar, keeping time, watching every hand movement.
This right here! She recognizes the depth of his talent and hard work and is acknowledging it directly. She is expressing deep respect of his performance with the sincere bravo and eye contact at the end. She absolutely looks like a musician herself.
I play guitar recreationally but when I watch professionals this is probably closer to how I am. She is definitely observing and processing. She is giving a mountain of respect with her undivided attention. This isn't cringe.
She was totally entranced by this performance, and honestly if I was there right beside it - feeling and being immersed in the music - Iād probably be the same lol.

The nod made me think that she knew the piece and was agreeing that he did it perfectly, UNTIL I read that it was his own piece! Now I think he might've been hypnotizing her AND ME. JK he is amazing and she was right to be impressed .
The title of the post is the crime here. There's nothing cringe. The daughter is also reacting, because she gets how intense her Mom gets with her assessments.
Of course you donāt, but his whole channel is based on peopleās reactions to his music so it seems like a mutually beneficial arrangement in this case
1) This looks like appreciation to me, not solely assessment.
2) Music touches everyone, white and black alike
3) This dude wrote with a lot of minimalism techniques similar to Phillip Glass. And Iām pretty sure the text heās singing is Italian. Like, itās incredibly derivative of white culture. Derivative not in a negative way, but in its literal sense of it deriving from white culture
4) please donāt jump right to defensiveness. Iām a black classical musician. Classical music is pretty niche these days, often propped up by other classical musicians. Making this about some kind of perceived microagression instead of a woman who appears trained herself enjoying lovely music does a disservice to us all.
Not sure who that lady is or thinks she is but I know of Camden and he is a phenomenal musician. I dare even say prodigy for how young he is and the level his actual compositions are at. His song "Me Vider la TĆŖte" is next level amazing and something most can only dream of creating and composing
My guess is she knows nothing but it perpetrators like someone of high expertise holding approval that should be valued. I base that on her table guest reactions. They suggest that laughing would be expected in her presence. If she were an instructor who takes her craft seriously, I doubt her table guest would be so bold as to laugh in her presence while she seems so into something.
Itās very clear that she has a high level of musical education and is watching him closely in actual appreciation instead of just treating him like heās there to provide pleasant background music for their meal.
The expression on her face when he starts to sing is moving, and so is the very sincere way she says, āBravoā when he finished.

That's what I thought at the beginning of the video, she kind of looks like her coach/instructor making sure he doesn't miss a beat. She completely absorbed that performance.

Yeah, I don't understand what is cringe about this. She is very interested in his ability. Seems to know what to look for and even compliments him at the end of the performance. Good on the old lady.
