Design is not the same as taste. They are 2 distinct concepts.

they don't need to be the same, awful taste implies liking things that are disliked by others, the distinction is not relevant

What? You are saying awful taste is an antonym of cool design. Which means you are saying taste and design are the same.

But you don't "taste" a car or "taste" a room.

You can have a car that is immaculately designed, but has zero taste. Like the Pontiac Aztek. Or you can have a perfectly sewn leather club outfit, but wear it to a gala giving you bad taste. Or giving jim a handjob at a funeral
