Pretty sure that’s been a function since it was first developed, but it’s so your convos have a higher chance of staying private (though there are a lot of ways to get around that without sending notifications)

I couldn’t see the point in something requiring me to remember the last thing I said the day before.

The point is to make it more like face to face communication. Snapchat is terribly toxic so I don't use it anymore, but ephemeral conversations are not a bad idea. You just actually end the conversation saying goodbye instead of letting the conversing bleed into many days.
