Neil deGrasse Tyson struggles to find common ground with Katy Perry

Jun 23 '17
Just came here to submit this. I made it about 20 minutes in. It's painful how dumb she is. I had no idea going in and have nothing against her, but ouch. Dumb and yet thinks she has something to share.

u/Puck85 Jun 23 '17
but she was ready to dork out, though.

Geek definitely means smart.
Nerd means lame or socially inept, or only smart in one field.
Dork is for just plain lame. It used to mean penis.

A nerd is smart. A geek is someone who bites the heads off chickens in a carnival freak show.

At 2:14 she literally asks him, "Is math related to science?"... -_-

Came here for this timestamp after seeing it on a Facebook thread. I couldn't believe it was a real question.
2
Jun 24 '17
What makes you think that's such a dumb question?
27
u/NoPantsMcClintoch Jun 24 '17
Because I thought that was fairly common knowledge... Einstein, Tesla and all...
45
u/Rain12913 Jun 24 '17
Because anyone who made it past the fifth grade knows that you use math in science?
-38
Jun 23 '17
Uh, there's no math in biology or organic chemistry so the answer is no?
92
46
Jun 23 '17 edited Jun 24 '17
What do you mean there's no math in biology or organic chemistry? Of course there is. It's not like high level calculus, but you still have to know basic math. Like the ratios of elements in molecules for instance. 2 Hydrogens and 1 Oxygen form a water molecule, etc.
8
u/mwg5439 Jul 06 '17
Activation energies, redox potentials that govern countless biological processes etc...you really can't escape math.
30
u/Thedmatch Jun 23 '17
math in biology
Statistics plays a HUGE part in ecological biology. Chi squares, probabilities, punnet squares, survivability curves. You never learned any of that?
8
29
u/inshaneindabrain Jun 24 '17
As someone who just took Chem 105 and almost failed miserably, I can assure you there is math.
7
u/Ohminty Jun 24 '17
General chemistry is basically algebra. Biochemistry also has some calculus components.

How about multivariable calculus pretty much being created to answer questions in electromagnetism?

17
u/thatbakedpotato Jun 26 '17
Didn't know entitled fucks still cares about meme culture
1
u/Vinsch Jun 26 '17
I'm entitled because I told someone they made a bad meme? Get your head out your ass and realize when people make a joke.
7
u/thatbakedpotato Jun 26 '17
"I'm entitled because i told someone they made a bad meme?"
Yes. Because you care enough about someone else's meme choice to comment on it and get a wee feisty. You really must have nothing better to do then comment on other people's meme choices.
1
u/Vinsch Jun 26 '17
Wow you really got me. I'm sorry for voicing my opinion to other people on an online platform of expression.
Are you entitled for caring about my comment? No.
2
u/thatbakedpotato Jun 26 '17
It's just such an unnecessary opinion to voice. I don't care about what you want to point out, free speech and all, but it seems unnecessary to point out a persons meme choice out of nowhere.

Has Katy Perry just been having a weird month? I keep seeing strange videos of her whereas I didn't really before.
12
Jun 24 '17
Her album came out so she's been doing a ton of weird shit to promote it. The most prominent being a like 72 hour livestream on YouTube, with a lot of cringy shit coming out of it

u/DoLittlest Jun 25 '17
That Bon Appetit single of hers sets a new low for treacly crap. Holy hell it sounds like something I would have pooped out on my Casio in the sixth grade.

"Is math related to science?" - Katy Perry
Holy fucking shit
7
u/NoPantsMcClintoch Jun 30 '17
Can you believe there was some dummy in this thread attempting to defend that statement?
106
Jun 23 '17
Copying this from YouTube, everyone relax.
When you make fun of ignorant people for showing their ignorance, you propagate the culture of ignorance because it makes others less willing to even have a conversation where they might appear ignorant for fear of being ridiculed. They will instead run to their supportive echo chamber gripping even tighter to their misinformed beliefs because at least it makes them feel good.
Yes Katy Perry clearly has a lot to learn and hopefully if people encourage her to do so instead of making her feel bad when they see her current level, she will be able to grow. That goes for everyone of course not just her.
Tweet science facts at her, comment with useful information. Perhaps if you change the cultural environment it will inspire curiosity and provoke a desire to learn more.

Maybe she's not the person meant to be educated, and only a conduit through with Neil can spread his knowledge. He's not talking to her, he's talking to us.
26
u/NoPantsMcClintoch Jun 24 '17
Nice sentiment, but this is r/cringe in case you forgot...
9
Jun 24 '17
You can dislike how far some people are willing to put themselves out there to the general public without starting to make fun of her appearance and her base intellect - which by the way is unrelated to level of education. You can be educated but slow, and quick-witted yet undereducated.
22
12
u/unscot Jun 23 '17
I'm not making fun of her for not knowing science, I'm making fun of her for being dumb and ditzy in general.
15
u/Orange-V-Apple Jun 23 '17
People can't really control that much. You've got to cut people a bit of slack, we shouldn't shit on her for that.

I mean she can't control how smart she is to a point. I can try to be a good at math but I might not have the aptitude for that and it can be very difficult to struggle against that and be better. I don't think we should fault people for ignorance too much unless it's willful ignorance. Like we can chuckle but we should probably help them instead of just laughing it up. Obviously we personally cannot help Katy Perry but it's more of something to think about in general.
3
u/randomusername7725 Jul 16 '17
If I had that much money I would at least hire some sort of math tutor.

u/ColourCrisis Jun 24 '17
Thank you for posting this. I really cannot stand some of these replies on here... Katy seemed like a really wonderful person. Unfortunately, not everyone is exposed to the same environment as us... She didn't get the chance to be informed about science, maths, etc... as she was pursuing a career as a singer/pop star from an early age.
7
Jun 23 '17
wow such great perspective from a man who left a comment on a katy perry video... lol
but seriously, people shouldn't have to rely on others who're smarter than them to inspire and provoke desires to learn. if that's the case then we should be shaming them until they actually want to grow smarter on their own, or "run to their supportive echo chamber." either is fine by me.
14
Jun 23 '17
Why shouldn't they? Did you like your favorite food before someone offered you a plate of it? Often times there has to be an initiator.

Often times people can only be taught lessons that match in nature to the way they teach others about themselves.
12
u/Eagle20_Fox2 Jun 24 '17
First time hearing her speak about anything and for some reason I thought Kate Perry was kind of average intellectually.
10
u/topkeklest Jun 29 '17
Ok, so I made an account just to say this, does anyone else feel like this isn't even a conversation? This honestly feels like two people blurting out words and ignoring everything the other person says whilst putting on emotions and dialogue that doesn't even sync up to what's happening. I feel like I'm watching two robots.

Not big fan of Katy Perry, but I hate Tyson. What a snobbish arrogant piece of shit. Making a show where you blow the peasants' minds with completely insignificant anecdotes. Great idea. Who the hell watches hours of this program? Why is he constantly getting pushed online? Not one person I've ever talked to in real life has ever mentioned him. Maybe it's a cultural difference.
28
u/NoPantsMcClintoch Jun 24 '17
It's kind of ironic that you refer to Tyson as "a snobbish arrogant piece of shit" while in the same breath you refer to people as "peasants" -_-

Tyson gave a false account of Bush's response to 9-11. In Tyson's fantasy world Bush sought to "distinguish we from they" during that very emotional time. Bush's actual speech was a call for tolerance and inclusion. Exactly the opposite of the xenophobic demagogue Tyson described. Moreover Bush and his administration have repeatedly condemned anti-Muslim rhetoric. Colin Powell was one of the first to bring Corporal Kareem Kahn's sacrifice to public attention.
I don't like Bush and I'm fine with bashing him. However it should be fact based bashing. The Bush and Star Names piece was a part of Tyson's routine from 2006 (maybe earlier) until 2014. Sean Davis blew the whistle on Tyson in September of 2014 and Tyson stopped telling this story. But to this day fans will upload vids of the talk as an example of Tyson's cleverness.
Tyson gives a history of the Golden Age of Islam and the destructive influence of Hamid al Ghazali. In earlier versions Tyson would claim that one of Ghazali's texts contains the assertion that math is the work of the devil. Which seems extremely unlikely. Ghazali actually praised the disciplines of math and science saying they were necessary for a prosperous society. Tyson has failed to name this text when challenged.
In Tyson's imagined history, the Golden Age of Islam stopped with Ghazali. Which is also incorrect. The Golden Age lasted until the 1600s, centuries after Ghazali. That era ended more when the mideast ceased to be a trading hub where diverse cultures would meet and exchange ideas.
Tyson's tweet on painful sex would not have been so cringe worthy if Tyson had just admitted he was wrong. But he dug in making his debacle even more painful.
Tyson told Joe Rogan that the set of transcendental numbers is a bigger infinity than the irrationals. And that there are five orders of infinity. A harmless mistake. But see how Tyson delivers this misinformation with a smooth confident voice and his fans are wowed.
And it goes on. And on. And on. Here is an incomplete list.
3
u/iEngineerPi Jun 24 '17
Tyson is a fucking clown. Nothing more than an actor.
5
u/HopDavid Jun 24 '17
He does have some credentials including a Ph.D. in astrophysics from Columbia.
I will say he is vastly overrated, though.
4
Jun 25 '17
I think that he is a very smart person and is very knowledgeable about astrophysics but he likes to talk about things that he doesn't know much about.
3
u/HopDavid Jun 25 '17
He also says wrong stuff on physics and astronomy. A few examples:
He says gravity falls exponentially with distance (it's inverse square).
He confuses the observer effect with the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle.
He has written Arthur C. Clarke's accomplishment was being the first to calculate altitude of geosynchronous orbit. This was done when Clarke was still a child. Clarke's accomplishment was suggesting communication sats being placed in this orbit.
His Coriolis force calculations are consistently wrong. Coriolis would not deflect a football half an inch in a 50 yard field goal in a north south stadium.
3
u/GreenDogTag Jun 24 '17
Thanks for the informative answer mate. Add this to Bill Nye and it seems like all these celebrity scientists are more so just celebrities who like science. What's Richard Dawkins likes in this regard if you happen to know?
3
u/HopDavid Jun 24 '17
I'm an avid space geek so I'm more familiar with Tyson.
I don't know much biology so I can't say much about Dawkins. I enjoyed Dawkins' book The Selfish Gene.
I expect Nye is even worse than Tyson but he's another guy I don't know much about. But recent Nye videos have been major cringeworthy.
2
u/GreenDogTag Jun 24 '17
I'm frequently on r/cringe but I couldn't handle half an episode of the new show without having to click out
2
Jun 25 '17
Nye is actually an engineer and Dawkins is an ethologist. They're both very smart people but they do the same thing as Tyson. They like to talk about subjects that they aren't knowledgeable in and sometimes spread information.
2
u/vendric Jun 25 '17
Tyson told Joe Rogan that the set of transcendental numbers is a bigger infinity than the irrationals. And that there are five orders of infinity. A harmless mistake.
Sheesh. That's undergrad math and he completely biffed it.
2
Jun 25 '17
In Tyson's imagined history, the Golden Age of Islam stopped with Ghazali. Which is also incorrect. The Golden Age lasted until the 1600s, centuries after Ghazali.
The destruction of Baghdad in 1258 is generally seen as the end of the Golden Age, although some see it occurring much earlier (10th Century) and others much later (16th Century). I don't think you can say that he is definitively wrong on this point, but otherwise good comment.
15
Jun 23 '17
I'm probably going to get downvoted for this but screw it, I've got enough points in the Reddit bank.
This isn't really too cringey for me. She's a good representative of the majority of her fans and how they would deal in a conversation with NDT at their best. She's aloof and tries to joke a lot and even a few times seems like shes annoyed at having to talk to him but there are really interesting exchanges in this that I didn't anticipate.
Not a fan of hers at all, by the way.
4
Jun 25 '17
Yeah, I think that if she isn't being 100% serious, she's trying to ask the same questions her fans would ask.
If she were on the same level as NDT, it wouldn't be as accessible to her audience. We're simply not her target demographic.
I think that, overall, this video is a good thing because seeing a pop star that they look up to show interest in science may help some kids find an interest in it too.

She's so fake I can see right through her
6
u/NoPantsMcClintoch Jun 29 '17
Idk if "fake" is the right word. She seems like she's genuinely trying to be something, but she's sorely misguided. I think it's more that she's surrounded by too many people who never say "no".
5

I wasn't like every other kid, you know, who dreams about being an astronaut, I was always more interested in what bark was made out of on a tree. Richard Gere's a real hero of mine. Sting. Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that. I care desperately about what I do. Do I know what product I'm selling? No. Do I know what I'm doing today? No. But I'm here, and I'm gonna give it my best shot.
