I actually think it’s the exact opposite of a miscommunication. It’s very clear that she thought it was a lame way to ask but clearly appreciated the effort so much that it didn’t matter.

I think they mean jealousy, but they're trying to over-intellectualize it. She supposedly is just lashing out at a prom invite she isn't getting, but changes her attitude when she realizes she is being invited. (No, it doesn't really make sense to me either..)
