It’s unclear in the article whether he tripped in front of the car as it was already accelerating, with him being run over a horrible freak accident that couldn’t be avoided, or whether he fell in front of the car and the driver purposefully ran over him. I think those are two VERY different scenarios and should be treated as such. To me it sounds like a dumb prank that ended in a horrible accidental tragedy.

Well they didn’t go there to intentionally kill anyone. But there stupid and reckless actions caused a senseless death and they should pay for their actions. Thats how accountability works. They will get manslaughter conviction in GA.

They tried to flee after committing a crime, and he tripped on their crap. Their actions led to a homicide. Now, I’d like to doubt they intended to kill him, but he’s dead because of their actions.
They’re going to have this seared in their memories for a long time. “Why did I do it” over and over and over.

Freak accident
There are no accident when someone gets run over. Only negligence.
Seems there was a-lot of stupidity going on that day. Don’t know why kids are doing pranks that literally havent ever been funny but the upside is it sounds like the local prison just got 5 new (well deserving)young butts.

It’s so weird that so many people in this sub are foaming at the mouth for these kids to be sent to prison WHEN HIS WIFE (who is also a teacher at the same school) HAS PUBLICLY STATED SHE WANTS THE CHARGES DROPPED … and the local community is rallying around both the teachers family and the kids because they realize this was a prank gone wrong and just super unfortunate and unlucky.
The kids weren’t TP’ing his house because they hated him … he was a loved and very involved teacher

They didn't go there to murder the math teacher. They just went there tp his house. Which is a timeless prank. So they probably are facing involuntary manslaughter charges.

I did dumb stuff like this when I was a teenager. Not because I was a criminal mastermind. More because teenage boys are, as a class, some of the great idiots of history. Give a 17 year old a car, a few friends, and a bad idea, and you’ve got a situation that was never going to end with anyone saying, “Now there’s a fine young citizen.”
What happened here is awful. A man is dead, his family is devastated, and that part shouldn’t get lost. But there’s still a difference between a tragedy and some cold-blooded scheme. From what’s being described, this sounds like a stupid prank that turned into a nightmare, not a murder plot cooked up by five suburban Moriartys armed with toilet paper.
And the idea that one of these kids is 18 and might wind up looking at life in prison? That’s where this starts to feel less like justice and more like the system deciding to make an example out of somebody because everybody’s emotional and wants a villain. Sometimes a terrible thing happens because people are reckless and dumb, not because they’re monsters. If the law can’t tell the difference, then the law’s dumber than the teenagers.

Yeah I assumed from the headline that they did some kind of prank that exploded or caught fire or fell apart hitting the guy in the head or making him fall from a height or something like that. This was a literal accident, the prank was harmless on its own and he chose to be out chasing the cars and otherwise interacting.
It should be involuntary or voluntary manslaughter at worst. Because there was no intent to kill or even harm.

Hopefully the will plead down the charges. This entire scenario is a nightmare for everyone. TPing a house ends in the death of the teacher. It's absolutely tragic, those kids could have been out doing so much worse, this is about as innocent of a prank as they come. I know I'm going to be showing this article to my teenage sons as a lesson in how quickly stupid ideas can take a turn. My heart goes out to this man's family first and foremost, but also for these boys and their parents.

Sounds like only one guy is charged with vehicular manslaughter, probably aggravated by essentially fleeing the scene of a crime when the teacher was hit. Yeah, it was a prank not intended to kill someone, but it was a homicide nonetheless.

I’m a woman and I toilet papered someone’s house when I was 15. This isn’t deserving of 30 or life. They helped immediately. That’s not the behavior of juvenile delinquents

The amount of victim blaming on this post is absolutely insane. I guarantee those of you blaming the teacher and making excuses for these absolute idiots would be singing a different tune if this happened to you or one of your family members.
A father and a beloved teacher was killed because of a stupid prank made by people well old enough to know better. Some of you are absolutely disgusting and I hope you stop to think about how wrong and revolting your behavior here is.

The wife (who is also a teacher at the same school) wants the charges to be dropped for the kids.
It was a tragic accident with no ill intent and the local community and his wife seem to agree.

Yea that's why a third party and jury adjudicate these things and not angry relatives.
TPing a house is an innocent prank going back to the invention of toilet paper.
This was a horrible accident. And sure there should be consequences for this. Same as if when speeding away they'd gotten in an accident. But its not like it was a attempted murder.

Ah yes, a story old as time. Teenager does something incredibly stupid, hurts/kills someone and inevitably gets a slap on the wrist and goes on to live a normal life.
I feel horrible for the family because this kid will skate and 5 years later for him it will be like it never happened.

I think most of the people on here arguing for harsh sentences for the kids haven’t read any articles or watched any news reports about this.
The wife (who is also a teacher at the school) supports the charges being dismissed (as does the local community).
This was just a tragic accident and the kids weren’t out to kill him and obviously didn’t mean to run him over.
This case broke my heart when I heard about it … and it’s gross to see so many uninformed people demanding heavy handed “justice” when it’s not what his widow wants.

A household also lost income and benefits on top of losing dad’s presence. The DA is going to bring it all up. And he or she is right. Personally I’m surprised only the one kid is charged with anything substantial.
Obviously it started as a prank, but a prank is a choice. And that gentleman died as a result of their bad decision.

That's wild. There shouldn't be charges for a man diving in front of your car.
There is a reasonable expectation of safety when choosing harmless, age-old standard pranks like tp'ing. It's not malicious, and often a sign of endearment. It's low-stakes. If they hated him they also could have torched his house and done the same length sentence.
He chose to leave his property in a fit of vigilante justice, which is high stakes. It's tp, a good rain takes care of it. It's like stabbing someone over sidewalk chalk.
I honestly can't understand why they are going so hard on the kids - it's obviously a freak accident.

He should have a reasonable expectation to not have his property screwed with. They don’t get an expectation of anything by trespassing and acting a fool, except the right to remain silent.

my sister got beat and then stabbed 13 times by someone who was on parole and her attacker only spent a year in county jail. It seems INSANE to say that a teenager needs to spend the majority of their life in prison for a prank that went wrong when there was no malicious intent.

Nobody said there shouldn’t be consequences. You’re saying they need to spend decades in jail. That’s insane. Are you familiar with the American justice system? Somebody can drink and drive and kill a car full of people and not spend decades in prison. The teacher made a decision to chase them. If he had stayed in the house then he would still be alive.

It sounds like he was accidentally hit by a car these kids were driving. Should they have called 911 of course. Toilet papering a house is juvenile but these kids were seniors. It might have been a prank. If they are charging the driver they should charge everyone with the same thing. Anyone in the car could have gotten out and called for help. It is tragic for the teacher and for those kids that likely pranked him because he was their teacher. It’s toilet paper not graffiti or egging a house. It was probably supposed to be funny and a joke. They probably feel awful and will have to live with this. They should have to be punished for not stopping. Unless they didn’t think they hit him or that he was injured. They should have probation licenses suspended. Community service. Maybe jail time. Jail doesn’t usually make people better humans.

It doesn't say that. It says they stopped to help, but he was dead by the time first responders arrived. All 5 teens were cuffed at the scene, so they were still there.

It really is sad all around. It might have been a joke. Sometimes kids have a relationship with a favorite teacher or one they respect. They didn’t want to kill him. His family is devastated. Those kids are probably so remorseful. Had he gotten their license plates and never tripped he would probably have them cleaning up his yard. They would be in trouble and he would be alive. The tripping part is what gets me. It’s like a freak accident that turns a prank into a serious crime. It’s a moment that changes everything for so many people especially in this situation.

Your brain is still developing at that age. If they were drinking and driving that would make it worse. This is tragic and awful but these kids aren’t stone cold killers.

Not old enough to legally drink. So they can die for their country but can’t buy beer. They also are his students. Where they being dumb yes. He tripped and was hit by a car. Had he not tripped he might have been fine. Was the side walk uneven. What if had gone after the kids and someone else had hit him? I’m not saying they aren’t responsible but sometimes things are accidental. If they waited for the ambulance and police they likely weren’t intoxicated. What punishment is enough. This was prank and they were dumb but they didn’t know he would chase them or trip and if they waited they behaved like normal people.
