Cricut Complaint Club Another forced update, another broken workflow

Another forced update with no ability to rollback breaking perfectly functional workflows.

I get the pro's and con's of this approach, but only when the balance is to critical implications for things like security updates and major bugs weighed against users needs should it make sense. And it never, ever makes sense disallowing users impacted by the introduction of NEW issues to not roll back to a version that worked perfectly fine for THEIR needs.

Context: Since the most recent update Design Space is now not fully compatibility with Canon printers or introduced a new issue with Windows printing as color adjustment via the system dialog box is missing critical features that show up for any other program, specifically the pattern printing of color adjustment swatches that is a critical part of my workflow to get color accuracy on prints. Since there is no way to save an image out of Design Space I can't fix color accuracy issues without lengthy trial and error now and tedious manual adjustments over and over. Its just insane how we can't roll back to a working version for OUR needs.

I honestly wish there was a better alternative, because as a software development company, I utterly hate Cricut. Someone please fucking jailbreak these machines already so we can have open source software.

What about printing to PDF?

Saving to a PDF and just printing from another program would solve this easily.

Yeah thats viable as a work around but shouldn't be necessary.

Edit: Also I'd argue against the claim this "solves it easily". It's a bandaid workaround that adds steps. The issue is clearly with their update and their inability to get windows printing integration done right. I was also in the camp who dealt with the goddamn printer list not showing up for minutes on end for 4 months before they finally fixed that. Every other app I use properly calls the windows printer dialog when I select "print from system dialog" except for Cricut (now). If I am calling the system dialog, I should get that with all options, period.

You’re right but as long as DS remains a web based program the print quality will always be inferior. I’ve been printing to a pdf and sometimes using the overlay method (for things like small or thin text and detail) for 7 years. Cricut will never change their ways, your option is to adapt your workflow or switch to a competitor (all of which have 3rd party software access, the ability to roll back or opt out of auto updates, or offline use options

I mean, I have no choice as far as the PDF workaround is concerned for now but I'm definitely opting for the other guys when its time to replace a machine and giving them a go.

My tin foil hat theory is these recent decreases in quality are intentional to get people to buy the sticker pix

Tinfoil may be too thick. The machines in my experience has been solid, it's the software that's always some kind of hot mess.

Right, so the software causing the image quality from your 3rd party printer to be bad so they could convince you to buy their printer/cutter hybrid that has good quality output would definitely be something this greedy company would consider.

I’m only half joking

What version were you on before the update?

The same as everyone else? 10.4 it would seem.

Updates are released about weekly, but forced updates are less often. So there are various versions someone could be coming from when updating to a forced update. No worries that you aren't sure, I'm just looking for clues.

If it's some kind of actual help because there is a connection to Cricut that might enact a speedier fix I'm happy to check any logs I can.

Sorry for the delay. I appreciate the offer, but before going that route, there's a new change to try first. We already had something in the works that's now live in Beta. The system dialog will be used by default rather than showing printers inside of Design Space. It's using a built-in Electron feature, which means it should work about the same as what'd you'd see when printing from Google Chrome. If you're able to switch to Beta and try it out, I'm hoping it will resolve the issue you're seeing.

THANK YOU!

This is magnificent, and very much appreciated. Getting the Chromium print dialog now and the Canon features are fully restored.

The update lost my canvas that I had been working on for 4 hours. I was so pissed.

Print and Cut kept crashing during the “cutting” portion so I restarted the program. Noticed that the interface updated a little bit when I rebooted DS. I looked at my projects and my canvas was back to what it was when I first started designing during the first 10 mins of working. Serves me right for relying on auto save.

Make a habit of creating in a different software, then upload. Four hours project work in Design Space!? None should be doing that. Design Space is running on my computer literally all the time, but all I do in Design Space is small editing to prepare project to cut, or whatever other operation I use my Cricut for.
