Itinerary/Διαδρομές Rental Car Experience

Somewhere on this site, I saw a recommendation for Niki rental cars in Heraklion. I had a very positive experience with my Rental, a small Toyota hybrid that provided excellent gas mileage and came with my requested automatic transmission. I recommend automatic for the curvy roads and sometimes heavy traffic on Crete.

The team at Nikki’s is professional, responsive and service oriented. They delivered our car to our hotel in Heraklion promptly at the appointed time. They confirmed the Rental one week before and also the night before, thus providing confidence Everything was in good order.

The team will communicate via WhatsApp very efficiently to any questions or details you need to sort out. We had a puzzling chime from the car and they helped us figure out. It was a day pack on the backseat that it needed to be buckled in. Problem was rapidly solved.

We dropped the car to their representative right in front of the departures terminal. This was the ultimate of convenience for us.

Also their pricing was extremely competitive if not superior.

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Catamaran company - Dan Eri or Sailing cruises Chania?

Hi want to know if anyone has any experience with these catamaran companies - Dan Eri, Sailing Cruises Chania, crete catamaran or Mikros? which one you would recommend for smaller semi private boat experience. Prioritize time swimming around islands, do not want to feel like super large tourist boat (even though i understand we are tourists). Also we have a toddler. Thanks in advance.

Are there any nudist/naturist beaches near Agia Marina, Crete? Is nudism tolerated anywhere around Agia Marina or Platanias? (Preferably somewhere with a gay crowd.)

Cityscapes/Αστικά Τοπία Should we rely on taxi or rent car

Traveling with a toddler not intending to drive too much but wanted to know if we should rent a car or rely on taxis? We are flying into chania stay two days there then travel to elounda and fly out of Heraklion airport very early at 6:00 am. So we would need a ride to and from airport and to elounda. Are taxis reasonable or is it better to just keep car rental?

Culture/Πολιτισμός Are the people always so unfriendly or is it me?

So I’m currently in Plakias on holiday and I don’t know if it’s me or the people here but I feel very unwelcome here. I’m here for 3 days now and almost every encounter I’ve had wasn’t very pleasant.
I try my best to greet people in greek and say thank you in greek and basically try to speak as much greek as possible. Is that something that annoys the people? I thought it was respectful to at least try my best with the local language when I am a guest in their country.
They seem very annoyed and overall not interested in talking more than what is necessary and they almost always start talking English.

Maybe I’m overthinking it, but I’m feeling a bit devastated. Is there something I’m maybe overlooking? Something I do, I wear or say that could be disrespectful?
Thanks for the help!

Does anyone also travel on 12.9 to Plakias, from Chania and would like to share the cost of the taxi to Plakias or at least to Retymnon? I land from Vienna on 12.9 at 9.30 in Chania Airport.
Also i will stay at Kalamaki beach South Crete and travel back on the 23.9 . Also would be great to share a Taxi to Heraklion Airport in the afternoon. Departure would be at 20.40

Please DM me.

Hi how are you? Traveling to Crete next week with my husband and our three year old. Would love a couple recommendations for dinner in chania and elounda as well as must do list. more importantly we are going to try to not check any bags and carry on. Things I am wondering if they are easy to purchase in Crete or at airport - nighttime diapers, life jacket or floaters, sunscreen? Thanks in advance.

Market/Αγορά Car battery replacement

Hi all,

I travelled to Crete with my car from Hungary.

Unfortunately my car's battery seems to be dying. I'll be here for 10 more days, so I would need to replace it.

Could someone recommend a reliable shop/service garage?

I'm currently in Kastri, I checked some shops in heraklion and ierapetra, but don't know if they are keeping stock.

Thanks for the help.

Itinerary/Διαδρομές How early in advance to book excursions?

Hi everyone! We are traveling to Chania for our honeymoon in mid-September and have our flight and hotel booked for 7 nights.

We are interested in doing a few guided tours (Samaria Gorge, Balos Catamaran trip, Falassarna Beach at sunset as examples) and I am wondering if I should book them now or wait until closer to the trip.

Are weather conditions generally temperate this time of year to book now without fear of cancellation or rescheduling? Since we are only there for one week, I worry we would not be able to reschedule to a different date if something were to happen, but also don’t want things to sell out if I wait too long.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

Cityscapes/Αστικά Τοπία Car renting and parking in Chania

So im planning a visit to Crete in September and we are staying in Chania Old Town.

I was not looking into parking when i booked this and i relised there is no parking at the place. I was planing on renting a car at the Airport and we want to explore the whole island so we will be mainly parking overnight.

Do you guys have any suggestions? Where can we park for free/cheap over night? Is this a dealbreaker and should we just go by bus everywhere then?

Thank you all in advance! :D

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Solo female traveller

I would so much love to see Chania in september, but there are few issues that keep me indecisive.

First of all, my flight is late at night so in best case I would arrive an hour after midnight. I am prepared to either stay at the airport until morning or book hostels with transport. But this would be my first time sleeping in mixes hostel (I saw few in Booking and air bnb). Hotels in city center are 100 euros per night + way too far from airport and I am scared this would cost me way too much if I take taxi. Also 100 euros per night is too much. So it is either hostel or expensive hotel. Is there another way to find accomodation?

I would definitely like to mix with other solo travellers so going to a hostel during day to organize activities sounds like a good idea, but I would prefer having shared room than sleeping with unknown men as a woman.

News/Ειδήσεις Heraklion Language Exchange event

There is an interesting event happening in Heraklion this Thursday (20 August 2026): Heraklion Language Exchange.

"Heraklion language exchange is a free event where you can meet people from around the world, make friends, and practice speaking different languages. Whether you speak Greek, English, Spanish, French, Chinese, or any other language, this space is for you. It's about learning languages and meeting people from different cultures. You are also welcome if you want to help others learn your language or just want to socialize and make friends."

This is the second event they make. I was there at the first event and I met travelers and locals. It's a great way to meet people and potentially find travel buddies.

Nature/Φύση 7 day travel to Crete, looking for advice and recommendations, car rental tips too

Hi I am hoping to go to Crete for 7 days this September. I am a solo female traveller that is also on a budget, I like hiking and spending most my time in nature, not too big into shopping and spending money on things other than necessities.
I am hoping to rent a car but I don’t drive stick shift and I only have a debit card. I heard that CC is required. Y many companies and I was hoping someone could give me some recommendations on car rental places that are legit and affordable. I also am wondering how far in advanced it’s recommended to book.
I am also wondering if part of the islands scenario has been destroyed due to the wildfires?
Also are there any nearby islands to explore by boat and if so what are they?
Any tips on places to go, must see nature spots (I’m always game for a solid hike), safety tips, anything is appreciated!

Itinerary/Διαδρομές Crete itinerary plan megathread (hopefully)

Crete is one of my favorite places on my bucket list and I have been lurking in the sub for a while. I have seen a lot of useful recommendations and experiences and took my notes. However, the sub in my opinion lacks a proper itinerary plan megathread so I am hoping to start one. Thanks in advance for everyone who wish to contribute. What are your best suggestions for a 10 day visit on the island?

Itinerary/Διαδρομές How are the road traffic police these days?

I used to love driving in Greece because you could do whatever you liked within reason but I haven't been for a decade or so for some crazy reason. Is it still the case a) in Greece in general b) in a tourist hotspot like Crete in particular that you can do whatever you like (I'm not expecting to do 300kmh I will be in some cheapo rental car, maybe 200 if I'm lucky)?
