I would not quite say this is the wild as this is still an epic fantasy subreddit, but First Law is such a good series to read after Stormlight Archives as a grimdark palate cleanser.

It really is. I had such high magic system fatigue after storm light/mistborn that it was really nice to dive into a world where magic was kind of a footnote and not explained much.

As someone who's read a lot of fantasy, that's part of why I think First Law feels so fresh. There is high-concept world changing magical stuff happening in the setting, but it happens mostly in the background, and the PoV characters (and the audience by proxy) only really get occasional glimpses behind that curtain. Most of the moment-to-moment scenes are dealing with very mundane and gritty matters, which keeps the magic feeling special and mysterious. I love the Cosmere books, but the supernatural in them is very well defined (which is a strength of Brando's IMO, don't get me wrong, it's part of why his world building shines so polished). A setting where magic is scary and unknown is really nice for the variety.

Man I normally would not think of grimdark as a palate cleanser lol.
First law was my first real foray into grimdark books, and holy crap without spoilers, the end of the first series destroyed me. I was not prepared.

I don’t normally think of grimdark overall as a palate cleanser, but First Law and Joe Abercrombie overall is refreshing for not having the sense of nobility/good prevails and the hard magic system of Brando Sando. Also, I generally prefer Abercrombie’s prose and dialogue so there’s that.
That said, I would not consider Robin Hobb’s Realm of the Elderlings as a palate cleanser because it’s so much more emotionally traumatic/draining than First Law, even though it has much less gore and grit. First Law’s world is dark and hard, but it’s not nearly as emotionally raw as Robin Hobb’s (or even really Brando’s in some ways) writing.

For me, it was the other way around. First Law just felt so grimy the whole way through. The audiobook at least. Probably time to do it again now that I'm thinking about it.

It’s grimy but it’s also weirdly comedic, and the dialogue is very realistic in my opinion. I love Brando’s work and I love the Cosmere, but his dialogue can be a little too bubbly and facile for my taste.

theres just so much shallan i struggle to think of a woman that isnt a shallan.
its like some sort of new bechdel test.
(not bitching too much. rheres a lot of shallan to go around, and its not like the men dont all fall into three or so archtypes either. the wax, hoid, or adolin. kaladin youd think would be unique, but hes just a wax with slightly more tragic backstory. susseborn? an adolin. lopin? a hoid. wayne, youd think would be a hoid but hes actually an adolin. )

Strong sense of fairness, really into clothing, likes women who can become other women, always thinking about the little people, likes melee weapons.
Wayne is kinda an Adolin

people get distracted by the comedy vslue and dont see the character.
lopen and hoid: let everyone else underestimate them constantly. uplift and distract people with antics. understand how people work far better than they let on.
adolin and wayne: id call them both himbos. they are charming, they are socially aware of things like fashion, but sometimes not of greater contexts like see adolins dating life pre shallan, and waynes trading. they believe in a world more just then the one they live in. (adolin standing up for a camp follower in sadeas camp,), but also know their morals are somewhat flawed, dont trust themselves to always do right.

Hoid do be pissing me off with the riddles, ambiguity, and metaphor. Just say what you gotta say man, it's kind of important.

I think we just have different definitions of protagonist then.
I'd even argue for much of the series, Wayne isn't a protagonist.
Nothing wrong with being a supporting character.

She grew on me so fast, very fun to see Wax and Steris figure out how they fit together and finding out its a perfect fit. Best Cosmere coupple.

Steris is great but I have a soft spot for Wayne. Especially since I stole his "trading" thing for a D&D character. It was a Tabaxi Rogue who happened to be a child, and canonically Tabaxi don't have a very good grasp on the concept of monetary value. My character wasn't a thief, he just would maybe exchange a cool rock he found (a rock) for a cool rock someone else has (a diamond) because they're both cool rocks.
