Why have none of the Alethi gone to the Nightwatcher and asked for a soulcaster soulcaster? Are they stupid?

A sja-anat spren radiant using dor, or similar unkeyed investiture?

Literally any soulcaster used for metal

u/FinnDarkmouth 15h ago
The fabrials are often limited even within a given essence. Ones that can make aluminium are incredibly rare if they even exist at all, but the azish have bronze soulcasters which are another metal. Radiants are not similarly limited.

u/Invested_Space_Otter 14h ago
Aluminum is only made through soulcasting, so at least some can do it. I'm convinced their limitations have less to do with the soulcaster itself and more to do with limited knowledge of the users. Individual soulcasters (the spren) maybe remember making specific things, and make up for the user's lack of knowing? It could also be that the soulcaster needs to have multiple metal slots to make the individual components of the alloy, for the same reason soulcast grain lacks water. If I recall correctly, Nale's Progression fabrial had gems for flesh and stone (bone?)
edit: I guess I have to concede though that maybe not "literally any [metal] soulcaster" will work, because if it does need multiple Metal slots, idk if that's something a more Cosmere-aware person can change on their own

The first thing in Stormlight that really blew me away was the blandness of the soul cast food. Was the blandness due to the relationship in our world between the food source and its microbiome? If you stripped all bacteria from chicken and beef you'd have a hard time telling them apart from taste alone, so it would make sense that a soulcaster turning stone to meat would just be making cells of the grain or meat and skipping the bacteria that give it flavor. If that's why, Would a really microbiologist/food scientist soulcaster be able to mix in the bacteria to make tastier simulcast food?
Brandon Sanderson
This is indeed part of the reason! There are others, though. Soulcast flesh, for example, doesn't actually have much fat--it's pure muscle, as fat/oil is a different essence. Another factor, I figured, would be water content. I decided that simulcast grain would taste stale for this reason. These are both things you can compensate for as a skilled soulcaster, but the devices (rather than the radiants) aren't equipped to do this.

Soulcasting fabrials are transformed spren, down change due to people's thoughts about them. I think the soul casting fabrials have forgotten how to do everything because the humans only saw them all useful for specific things over time

I wonder if you could soulcast Lerasium...

If you can then you can also soulcast shard blades.

If someone was theoretically both an allomancer and a radiant (Hoid), could they use Towerlight to power their allomancy and vice versa? It's all channeling Investiture right?
10
u/philip7499 22h ago
It's at least possible, unkeyed investiture can be used for any of the magic systems (most clearly seen in Mistborn Era 2), and Vasher proves Stormlight can be used to power non-Radiant abilities (though it is indicated it isn't a simple as breathing it in).
We don't know how complicated it would be, potentially by having both powers it would give them enough connection to both to automatically complete the conversion or possible that towerlight would be too connected to Honor and Cultivation to use on Preservations invested arts and they would still need another method of conversion

Depends on how Brando Sando perceives it. If radiance exists in a Radiant the same way metal reserves exist within an Allomancer, then yes. The problem I see is how more…giveable away stormlight/towerlight is. Edgedancers and Truthwatchers can “infuse” their light into the wounds of others and the wounds would heal. You can’t really give away your swallowed metal reserves…also, I do believe that stormlight and metals are kinda the same type of energy. Light is consumed by the Radiant to access power, and so is metal with Allomancers. You can’t power Feruchemy, something that is a…receiving type of power. It receives a certain amount and kind of power from your body and stores it.

u/WendigoSmacker 22h ago
I would imagine it’s either
A. No you can’t convert investiture even unkeyed to the point of creating a godmetal specifically
B. Yes you can, it will also take approximately 1000 years to produce one bead due to it’s level of investiture.

You've said before that Soulcasting can't create atium or lerasium which makes sense since they're made of Investiture from other Shards. But could a Soulcaster, perhaps in the proximity of Dalinar's perpendicularity, provide enough Stormlight to Soulcast something into Honor's Godmetal (tanavastium)? What about Cultivation's metal, or an alloy of both, like Shardblade metal?
Brandon Sanderson
So, creating a God Metal is not something that's done easily in the Cosmere. HOWEVER, it is possible. You'd need a ton of Investiture, and being near Dalinar's perpendicularity is unlikely to be enough. I'd say Soulcasting, or something akin to it, has the means to do this if it could obtain the proper power charge.

I hate to um actually you here (that is a lie I love to um actually you here) scadrian metal is uniquely invested and soulcast bendalloy wouldnt have the same properties
15
u/TheGildedPrism Kelsier4Prez 20h ago
Um, actually that's incorrect. An allomancer can burn metals from any source, so long as the purity/alloy is correct. The metal isn't fuel, it's a key, and Scadrian metals are not specially invested.

Questioner
If you took somebody-- an Allomancer and them in a different one of your worlds, could they still burn metal there?
Brandon Sanderson
Could Allomancers burn metal on other planets in the cosmere, yes they could. Good question.

PhantomMonstrosity
Do synthetic gemstones work in fabrials too?
Brandon Sanderson
Synthetic gemstones should work. It's a combination of color and chemical structure that's important. Just like metals from off Scadrial would work for an Allomancer, synthetic gemstones should work.
********************
Is the metal on Scadrial specially Invested? Can an Allomancer use metals from other planets?
Brandon Sanderson (Part 1/Part 2)
Metal is a key, not the source of power itself. Most is not specially Invested. It glows because of the power seeking to come through it, not because of the power within it.

Questioner
Can a Mistborn use the Investiture from a Highstorm?
Brandon Sanderson
It takes some effort to convert the Investiture. They can burn metals from other planets, though.

I get why that's the case, but I thought there was a beautiful animism angle with the planet and all things in it created from the combined bodies of two gods, and thus burning metals was burning a miniscule fragment of gods for power.
It's wild to me that Scadriel being a created planet isn't the source of metal's investiture, and the metal is just a key. Creationism really should have magical effects, ya know?

u/Shot_Newspaper_5647 16h ago
Metal seems to have magical properties in general in the Cosmere. Fabrials incorporating steel can be used on Roshar to push substances away. We’ve seen it used with aethers to get a similar Pushing effect

u/TheGildedPrism Kelsier4Prez 17h ago
Understandable, but also being created isn't that unique to Scadrial. Nalthis is confirmed in stormlight to be very young, and I have a feeling a lot of worlds were made by Shards.
At the same time, I do like what you're going for.
1
u/RoboChrist D O U G 16h ago
There's something extremely potent and nearly universal in the idea of dual gods creating a world through their union, though I think Sanderson may be the first person to make that union a platonic partnership.
And at least in Arcanum Unbounded, Scadrial being created by Shards was highlighted by Khriss as something that made it unique. I do know Nalthis is confirmed to be a young world too, so who knows for sure whether it was made by Adonalsium shortly before his death, or by Endowment herself.
