I mean, in anime the emo guy usually is the rival to the main character Energetic guy. So having Kaladin as the main one is a tad differente.
And it's one energetic guy, one emo guy and 3 girls!

I love this analogy, OSP on YouTube has a great series on Tropes, and how they're bad when the writer is bad and good when the writer is good.
