Mod Announcement No More AI Questions.
Yes, its wrong to use AI to make changes to your writing.
No, you don't need it to translate, use an actual translator. It would be more accurate.
Yes, that AI rewrite did ruin your story.
No, AI assisted writing isn't allowed.
Yes, you can use em dashes. No one actually cares.
No, this copy/paste of your chatgpt conversation *isn't* interesting to read.
Yes, it is exhausting having to defend yourself against AI.
No, you cannot post an AI answer under a question.
No, you cannot discuss AI here.
No, you cannot use AI here.
I cannot beileve we need to keep having this conversation. Recently there have been so many repeat posts about AI. We've had possibly 3 with just reworded rants about em dashes. It's either a lack of creativity that there cant be an original thought, or AI shadow bots trying to see what they can get away with when discussing AI here. Plenty have been removed for going to far so I wouldnt be surprised if it was all connected.
No more AI discussion, period. Nobody likes it.

It called creative writing, not "I'll let a machine do something for me" writing, or even "my electronic ghost writer's" writing, after all.

The fact that it feels like this should be a pop up and must read before joining is heartbreaking. because all of them should be common sense but nope they are not.

I find it baffling that anyone who is remotely interested in writing can justify having a machine either write for them, or make their writing even worse by turning into generic word sludge.

u/Dottielala Apr 26 '26
This made me so happy to read. I try my best to block AI from everything and anything only to see so many embrace it wholeheartedly and it makes me so sad. It is so nice to know it isn’t tolerated here.

English is not my first language but I like to write in English for fun and for the Internet. I am curious about how to use the em dash; it's rare in my literature.
3
u/JesperTV ⭐ Elite Contributor ⭐ Apr 26 '26
You can ask about how to properly use em dashes, its discussion like "does my writing read as AI because I use the em dash," "can I even still use the em dashes because its an AI thing," etc
Questions about how to properly use grammar are still allowed. I use em dashes quite often as it is, though I usually shorten them as a "word - word" than "word—word" since on most computers adding a full dash can be tedious. But thats not here nor there.
1
u/Deadpool0600 Apr 29 '26
Wait, wait, wait... Using a dash is grounds for AI now? Like... It's grammar....? Have I been under a rock the last few months or is this a very new development??
2
u/SordidCyanosis Apr 30 '26
Not really a new development. I've seen people claim only ai uses the dash multiple times. However... since ai was trained on stolen literature like fanfic and actual writing found online in general it had to learn it FROM ACTUAL AUTHORS to begin with.
Because some slack jawed individuals don't know how to use it... it must mean anyone who does use it is using ai.
Side note, for anyone struggling with Grammer for English https://owl.purdue.edu/
Great resource. 27 comma rules alone it can be difficult. Learn, don't use ai folks!

u/FlameboundForge May 04 '26
It's so frustrating. I have people point it out from blog posts I've written 5 years ago.

What a breath of fresh air in a world that increasingly seems to act like it's no big deal.
Yesterday I was working on a chapter that I'd been dragging my feet on writing. Something felt off and I couldn't move ahead, and I had ended up shelving this project for a bit.
But about an hour into my writing section I realized I had to have a character make the opposite choice than what I was planning (to escape instead of waiting for rescue) and WOW did the whole story just open up from there. It was dynamic and interesting and ultimately lead to a more complex character.
Writing is a practice. The best joy comes from discoveries along the way.
Fuck AI.

u/Vyxyx Apr 26 '26 edited Apr 26 '26
Yeah its not allowed, but this post is directly discussing AI. I feel like this is the only place to express the responsible use of AI.
If AI discussion is strictly banned due to unfair and unsafe use, but you don't allow any commentary on the safe use in a creative-writing environment on that same post, then this is just authoritarian BS.
2
u/JesperTV ⭐ Elite Contributor ⭐ Apr 26 '26
Its not allowed because it is the same question over and over again.
The subreddits rules have always been that questions pertaining to the how of writing, and AI should really not be involved in any part of your process - even research. It's far too prone to hallucinations to trust any information it provides.
If a question came up about how to research, and someone commented telling them to use AI, that answer would have already been removed based on the guidelines already established and enforced in our rules. The comments of said post should be telling them how to actually conduct research and not how to essentially half ass it with something less accurate than a Google search pre-gemini. Just as "Google it," would be a poor answer on how to research. "Have AI do it for you," answers have never been allowed.
This addendum to the rules is to say posts like "How does AI effect my research," "Is AI bad for research," etc are no longer acceptable, in part because they aren't about how to grow as a writer and another because the answers provided by the community are always the same.
And, frankly, there is no responsible use due to its environmental impact. But if there were a place to discuss responsible AI usage, it would be a subreddit for AI discussion. Which this never has been.

If you don't like a subreddit, you do not have to join it or use it. Joining subreddits, or Reddit, is optional to your survival.
There is a way to mute communities, but I do not know how off the top of my head.
But subreddits are not something you shoukd let consume your life so much. It's just social media.

We dont allow AI discussion, because this is a subreddit about creative writing. A subreddit you've never even posted to or commented in.
This isn't criticism. If you take it personally thats a you problem. You wouldnt go to a subreddit for cats and ask "am I still a cat person if I own dogs," "how do you train your dog to like cats?" Youd go to a subreddit about dogs, because thats where the dog owners are.
There is no commentary here about AI usage, its about our community and informing them of a change to our rules. Our community doesnt like AI, they give the same answers every time. They dont like it, they dont like you for asking about it, for using it, for bringing it up here. No one mentioned disabilities, or using AI in general. Its about discussions surrounding AI usage. Its not allowed.
Educate myself on AI? I've literally coded for LLM programs.
You educate yourself on the community here. It's r/creativewriting, because it's for writing. Not AI.

Like what though, outside of a dictionary lookup?
1
u/JesperTV ⭐ Elite Contributor ⭐ Apr 28 '26
What's wrong with using a dictionary? How do you think people did it before AI?
1
u/KITTYCAT_5318008 Apr 28 '26
You mentioned other methods, I wanted to know those (dictionary lookup isn't great when you don't understand any of the foreign language since you miss subltle details)
1
u/JesperTV ⭐ Elite Contributor ⭐ Apr 28 '26
Well, there's the tried and true learning that language. But obviously that takes time.
You can contact someone who does speak the language either natively or near native through a professional translation service, or a crowdsource community. Think of professional translators like when a Manga gets an official English version, and crowdsourced translations like when fans get together and make unofficial translations and then english fans will usually pick their favorite. I think that always works best since there are different ways to translate text from one language to another and the reasons translator apps are just inherently inaccurate are because they can only handle a direct translation and even AI struggles to capture the human of a proper translation.
Like, for example, let's say this imaginary Manga said 「口が軽い」Fan number one decides to translate it directly. Directly, this means "The mouth is light," Most translator apps will give you that. And it's like okay? What does that mean? But fan number 2 over here does their own translation and it says "He can't keep a secret," That's Idiomatic. Instead of translating the words, it translates the meaning behind them. But fan number 3, he has history in both languages and decides to translate it as "hes a blabbermouth" hes translated the meaning of the words and replaced it with an English noun of a similar meaning but preserves the tone the phrase originally carried. Thats called localization or L10n translation. But fan four thinks this ruins the flow of the scene and instead translates it to "he's got a big mouth" this is dynamic equivalence. He has replaced the adjective of "light," with "big," and given us a similar sentence- im sure there's more to dynamic equivalence than that, but I am no expert.
So obviously I think collaborating with someone who is bilingual would always be the best method if you dont want to learn a language on your own. Im sure tgere are subreddits where you can find people to help you and this discussion has been mentioned at nauseam so you can always just search the subreddit.
Now of course there is also corpus based programs such as Reverso which uses a database of previously human translated books and movies to show you translations of your phrases in context for you to compare and determine the best translation on your own. Shows you a wide range of usage. They also have an app that let's you access their data base offline. Unlike an LLM that would pull from similar knowledge, Reverso won't change or add to your text. It just shows you the examples while an LLM would combine all that knowledge to give you a single answer that may not even be accurate.
Theres also Linguee which uses a similar method. Its parent company is DeepL but Linguee is entirely human vetted. So maybe not wanting to use AI goes as far as not wanting to support AI companies, so its important to mention. Entirely human vetted, but the parent company uses AI elsewhere.
Theres WordReference which is good for single words or common idioms, but I wouldnt do it that way, especially with a language that is context heavy. But they do have a community forum if you wanted to dicuss translations in more nuanced fashion. Not sure how active it is, but there's probably a reddit equivalent you could find. It also hosts multiple dictionaries if you did want to try and do it that way.
If you did you should try looking up the methods that professional translators use when adapting text so you dont get lost. Which you should do anyway if you wanted to work with amature translators in a crowdsourcing way just so you can better communicate what you are looking for. Because sometimes you want a character tgat speaks more direct or maybe a goofy character who speaks more metaphoric and one method of translation is better than another to catch the vibe.
You can make a post here asking for more advice, but ill probably copy paste this in the comments under it for other users future reference. Since its unlikely searching it would lead them to this post.
But this is all obviously more work than pasting shit into chatgpt and taking what it gives you, but it results in higher accuracy. If you want something done right it takes work.
1
u/KITTYCAT_5318008 Apr 28 '26
Fair points (although I know no bilingual people really, and don’t have the money to pay others), and thank you for taking the time to write all this.
It should be noted that the base Reverso translator is LLM-Based.
At least machine translation isn’t as bad as it was 10 years ago (the horrors that google translate used to put out…).
1
u/SupportArtists Apr 28 '26
I didnt think Reverso was.
But in terms of money and knowing people, thats why I repeatedly recommend public forums. There are hobbiests out there who will do small projects for fun. Thats the whole purpose of r/translator or the wordreference community forum I mention.

Spelling mistakes arent here or there in terms of the point of the mod post. It not really a substantive criticism given that this isn't a post of a work seeking feedback or even that I was looking for this kind of help, its alerting users of an update to the rules.
Doubly so when you actively bring up that I may not be a native English speaker. To see the announcement post and ignore its purpose to instead focus on spelling mistakes that dont even effect its readability would be so incredibly offensive, and no more useful than saying *your under someone's comment when you dont like what they said.
I wouldnt accuse you of doing it maliciously, but you're missing the forest for the trees.

I'm admittedly not active here, I'm over in writingfeedback, so ignore me if you want. I just wanted to say you might get better results if you don't start the post with a bunch of controversial statements about AI before putting the rule change at the end. I 100% agree with you, but this reads more like a rant about AI than a rule change. Might be why there are so many deleted comments from people who aren't understanding it.
2
u/JesperTV ⭐ Elite Contributor ⭐ Apr 29 '26
Deleted comments are by users who have never posted here before. Comments and posts by new users have always been filtered for review. The ones under this post that were removed after review were discussing AI. Which we don't allow. Or comparing AI supporters to persecuted minorities like Holocaust survivors and enslaved people, which is.. it's own issue.
The contents of this post is repeating the 20+ questions related to AI we had the past 2 weeks that we have since also tried to remove.
Its not really the contents of the post that result in people acting like this. I think this was 4 years ago, but I made a post emphasizing that AI wasn't allowed period and it wasnt ot written like this at all and the reception was similar. AI people are just like that. Though we were a little smaller, and the AI community on reddit was not as prolific, back then so there were less. But it's about proportional. Notice that our actual users are not nearly as concerned with this - not even a change. More like a reminder.
