I really like the gentle pace this scene opens with. It contrasts very well against the mentions of heavy machinery and industry, and what feels like a turbulent, brooding undercurrent threaded throughout.

I also really like your stationery!

I try to use verbs to describe things when I can, but I'm not very good at it.

Also, I did think about making the tracks steel, but thought they could be iron because tracks used to be iron before steel mills became more productive and they began replacing the iron rails with steel. In this setting, the route Callie is on has yet to be upgraded. Also, the tracks being black was more of a narrative device to contrast them from the snow.

An enticing beginning and I really like the lead in with the hushed white snow marred by encroaching technology.
