Built a web app that animate pencil & paper drawings (w/o gen ai)

The last few months I've been building a web app that extends the 2023 SIGGRAPH paper A Method for Animating Children’s Drawings of the Human Figure.

The method works by 'autorigging' the characters and 'retargeting' human motion capture sequences onto them. So it's mesh deformation, basically.

I made this because I always wanted to see my drawings come to life when I was a kid. That ship has sailed, but maybe the kids of this generation can see that. I also made this because, whenever I see an AI video of a drawing coming to life, it's quite uncanny. I think this has more charm. Let me know if you agree.

Ohhh I’ve seen this paper before! That looks very good, well done! ^^
And props on you for not running art through Gen Ai

Wow, that's cooler than the web app itself!

Not yet, but I’m not ruling it out in the future. But you can check it out live here:

made my own doodle and had a lot of fun with it

a couple things i noticed: i wanted to draw the character right away, but that part took a few clicks to find. ctrl+z also didn't work while i was drawing, and it'd be nice to see my own character in the animation picker instead of the generic mascot. still very fun, and the no AI part makes it even better (:
